1st and 10. 3 Timeouts. 1:10 Left. In FG range. Down by 3. And we try to pass?

A loss is a loss. Hindsight coaching is easy.

It wasn't hindsight for me. I was screaming it at the TV screen for the 15 seconds or so leading up to the play.

I was shouting NO MISTAKES, RUN THE DAMN BALL, NO MISTAKES, RUN THE DAMN BALL.

The OP fails to include that had the play resulted in a TD, the call would have been 'genius'.

Doubtful. Most likely, with a minute left, they would have thrown 3 or 4 20-yard passes and beat us at the clock.

Hence, one of the reasons for running it on first down.

It ain't rocket science.

I understand your point 100%, but passing was working for us. We were throwing the ball all over the field and those 10 yard out routes were almost always open.

I completely see what you're saying and you have a good point, but you can't blame Clowney busting through Richardson on one play to hit Bray and force a fumble on bad play calling.

Yup, without a doubt we were throwing well.. But we should have saved that for 2nd or 3rd or 4th down. We needed to control the ball and limit the chances of mistakes on first down.

And with 3 timeouts left, that meant running. the damned. ball. We were averaging around 4 yds a rush.

:good!:

Yeah that is totally on the coaches.

It's hard to defend these guys anymore. That game was ours.

Bad playcalling.

When you're away, you play to win, at home, you go for a tie...that's how the odds see it, and hell it's even in an unofficial coaches guidebook.

Lets see- we should play for a chance for Palardy to TIE THE GAME. that is pure genius. I can think of no one steadier than Palardy when the scheiss hits the fan . Then, in OT, we have the home crowd and all that going 4 us. The call wasnt the problem, choking ( as usual) was. I knew someone would screw it up- past performance tells me that .

Negateer I usually agree with alot of what you post, but this time I cant.. we were going for the win. It just so happened that clowney finally made a play after being shut down the whole game.. If tiny had not shut him down the entire game we would not have even been close to winning that game.

But he was bound to get in a good play at some point.. you just dont shut a player like that down completely. Players that good find a way before its over to make a difference.

Hats off to Tiny for a great game. I think he proved he is the best O-lineman in the country and is just a sophmore.. If he stays healthy and keeps up this level of play, he will be the best O-lineman to come out of Tenn in a very very long time..

Cant wait to see how much he improves next year..

Who said anything about playing for a tie?

Playing for a tie would have been kicking a field goal on first down. I said RUN on first down.

Well, I mean exactly that, going for a win. It was first down. A minute left. ALREADY in field goal range, so at that point our worst case scenario was going for the tie.

We needed to protect that at all cost. You go for the win while protecting what you have already earned, i.e. the chance to tie the game. But again, we failed to run in a textbook running situation. It's happened over and over this year, passing when we should be running.

if we had ran it and got stuffed people would be saying "why didnt we p ass it, the couldnt cover us".....

Not me. If we had got stuffed, it would have been 2nd and 10, and I would have been saying "good, we ran thirty secs off the clock. Now lets see what we can get on second down."

And still in field goal range. And still with 3 timeouts.

Textbook.

Just an unfortunate play for UT and an excellent play by Clowney. One of those things.

Pretty much. You have to go for the win on the road. Especially with that field position. Bray has 1/2 a second more to make the throw the outcome could have been much different. All the naysayers now would be hailing Chaney for his play calling. Hindsight is 20/20 nega's.

No racist.

Running on 1st down with a minute left and three timeouts IS going for the win on the road.

Inexcusable.
