i no im a volsfan but i honestly say charles woodson. peyton manning threw for 3800 yards, and today that would be plenty. (only good qb's win today).

but consider this, the heisman goes to the most OUTSTANDING cfb player. i think that was woodoson. he was the most outstanding player. peyton lead us to a great season 11-2 but woodson lead the woverines to 12-0. woodson made huge plays whenever it counted. he was the most outstanding player. he did everything. he was like reggie bush (who i think should win more then lineart for the same outstanding reason).

youve gotta be kidding me. woodson?!?! you really think he was a better player than maning. this just shows u that the heisman is a joke. peyton deserved it and was shafted. true, woodson was the best defensive player of the year. but not the best player. the media was up his butt constantly. im surprised at halftime in the rose bowl nobody was interviweing him while he was takin a pee

Had he beat Florida it may have been different. The vols would been Undefeated going into the Orange Bowl against Nebraska.

Who's Charles Woodson?

Charles Woodson. Big time players make Big Plays in Big Games. Everytime the spotlight was on Woodson in big games on Natl' TV, he shined. He picked off passes, shut down big time recievers, Caught passes on offense for TD's, and ran punts back for TD's...hell, he even had rushing TD's. He was the best player in the country by far in '97. Peyton is incredible, but in '97 when he had chances to prove himself, he lost. Woodson won a Natl' Championship, plain and simple, he deserved it. End of Discussion.

THe hesman was given before the bowl games. IF both UT and Mihigan were undefeated - Would Manning or Woodson get it.

i tthink woodson was worthy of the heisman but i think peyton shouldve won. not takin anything away from woodson but atleast both of them went onto have great nfl starts and still continue to do well. Anyone that has any sense knows it shouldve been manning.

Give the man a star for bravery for getting on a VOL board and saying nothing was wrong about OM losing the Hesiman to CW.

asking if Peyton Manning should've won the Heisman on a Tennessee Volunteers board...I cant see any reason for this poll being bias or anything.

You make it sound like Woodson was awesome at every position, when he was actually average at everything but defensive back.... he just played alot of positions. You also make it sound like he scored a multitude of touchdowns on punt returns, rushes, and receptions, etc.

Woodson's stats from 1997:

12 games played

5 rushes for 21 yards (4.2 avg), 1 TD and a long run of 33 yards. You do the match, he lost 12 yards on the other 4 carries.

12 receptions for 238 yards (10.8 avg) and 2 TDs.

0 kickoff returns

36 punts for 301 yards (8.4 avg) and 1 TD. Had a long of 78 yards against Ohio State to raise his average to 8.4 ypp.

On defense he had 47 tackles, 1 sack, 9 defensed passes, and 8 interceptions. He scored 0 defensive touchdowns.

The only spotlight on Woodson was during the Ohio State game. He accounted for only 4 Michigan TDs (24 points) in 1997.

You won't find any of his stats in the record books other than that he won the Heisman Trophy.

In contrast, Peyton Manning passed for 3819 yards on 287-of-477 passing. He passed for 36 TDs and rushed for 3 more TDs for a total of 234 Tennessee points. That is almost 10 times the point production of Woodson. (9.75 times to be exact) I don't care how much of a force a player is on defense, Woodson was not even close in determining the overall outcome of each Michigan game as Manning was for Tennessee.

Let's see what the point per game average for each player was:

Peyton Manning 19.5 points-per-game
Charles Woodson 2.0 points-per-game
difference 17.5 points

My problem is this...the award is SUPPOSED to go to the most outstanding football player...but it has become a stat thing. Surely nobody thinks that there weren't better players out there than Doug Flutie or Ty (you've got to be kidding me) Detmer or Gino Toretta. It's just that that one year everybody decided that the most outstanding player would get it. If it's a stat thing...Manning...if it's an outstanding player thing...Woodson. Too bad for guys like Tommy Frazier and even Orlando Pace that it never was a true outstanding player award though. As for me...I quit paying one lick of attention to the show the year Detmer won it.

Woodson .... NO

He was average way more times than he was spectacular.

If he had about 600+ yards receiving, 300+ yards rushing and scored more than 10 offensive TDs to go along with his defensive stats I would be more agreeable. He just did not have enough touches to effectively dictate the outcome of EVERY game that Michigan played that season.

Even when he got touches defensively, he only had 11 return yards total for all his interceptions! and he only had 1 punt return longer than 12 yards!

I would hope a QB would have better point production than a DB. How many times did Manning get an INT? Comparing point production to a defensive player's is a pretty weak argument.

Yes, it is.

And Woodson might have better Defensive stats if people would have actually thrown the ball to his side of the field more than once a game. Woodson ran punts back for big yardage on several occasions, not just that TD against Ohio State. Even a punt return of 15 yards is big time for your offense. He helped out everywhere he could. And just him being on the field on offense demanded attention.
Obviously more people agree with me because Chuck has the trophy right now...

I love what peyton did for us... But, If he wanted that trophy he should've beaten florida.

You don't leave it to the voters...make it impossible for them to vote against you. Woodson was a flashy, fast gamebreaking conrerback on an undefeated team. Peyton was a great Qb who never beat Florida.

This was just another display of northern bias and tennessee getting robbed (johnny majors).

Ask yourself this. If I were putting together a football team and could choose from the two - who would I have chosen for my team? Could this decide who becomes more valuable?

well that is a battle the qb always wins. that isnt fair because the qb has the most chances for that.

i think peyton was great and he is better then woodson now.

i just htink woodson deserved it that year.
