I was there is the south endzone. The only game I rushed the field and ran and left out the north endzone. It was a fun day in the light rain and drizzle. GBO

That was my freshman year. It dumped the rain. Tore down the goal posts. Part of it was hanging in The Lap on the Strip forever.

Probably the huge shoulder pads from the day.
Yep shoulder pads were enormous and they wore thick thigh and knee pads back then. Now a lot dont even wear knee pads just bremuda short type pants with bare knees. The uniforms made players look way bigger than they were, plus some wore neck collars which enhanced the look. Now players are opting for less to get that tenth of increase in speed and twitch.

Look at the size of our offensive lineman! Tree trunks for legs! Why can’t we have lineman that look like that these days? Now we recruit kids that are 6’5 250 so they can put on good weight🙄

Give me these road graders!

I was on a work trip in Japan during this game. I missed the start of football season that year. Back then I got my updates by waking up at like 2am on Sunday morning and listening to the armed forces network, they had a game of the week that I would listen to for scores etc.
Imagine the feeling when I turned it on and realized the game of the week was tn vs aub.
John Ward did the call... never forget that game.

I think the bigger shoulder pads were better and helped save shoulders more. Folks wearing less padding has to cause more bruises and injuries. Not being able to practice as much also doesn’t help. Less practice actually causes more injuries. Go to be smart but the time restrictions need to be changed back to how they were back in the day. GBO

Ya know, that checkerboard endzone is pretty sweet. Maybe that should come back!
May be wrong but I think there's a rule now that there has to be plain grass or artificial turf between the goal line and any paint.

Edit: must be incorrect. LSU's end zone paint covers the entire end zone.

That's a very young Jim Nantz with Pat Haden doing the color.
I had to go back and listen to realize that was Nantz. It’s crazy how long guys like him, Michaels and Costas have been at it.

We’ve got big lineman now. The pads were just bigger back then if I’m not mistaken.

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I am pretty sure those goalposts made an appearance at the the Last Lap during the post game celebrations.

Yes, we carried out one goal post on our shoulders and then took it out of the stadium - I was leading at the head of it, shirtless in the rain - and we carried it up to the strip and then to the firehouse where we cut it up. The first 2 pieces I cut with a hacksaw and then we used the jaws of life to clip the others. I got the one with the end cap with the swivel to hold the net. The bars would fill it with beer free when I brought it in. I dare say I probably have the only piece in existence of a Vols goal post that was torn down, certainly the only one with a cap. Actually I remember that there is one other guy on here who says he has a similar end cap from 98 when they tore it down.

The other bar ended up in the Lap where it was for about a week IIRC and they offered a $500 reward for them because for some reason, they had the poles but did not have the end caps and needed it for the game. The lap gave it back but I never gave mine up. 500 longnecks at the lap would have been great for a starving student but never gave it up.

After that, they put cops and dogs on the sidelines lol.

Yes, the great Cobb Webb duo that made it all possible!

Yeah I wore all of that including the cowboy collar.

Hi guys! It has been a good while since I’ve been here, but I just wanted to say. Do you put in Ryan Staub for a series, or do you stay with Brandon?
