Therefore it was 37 years ago tonight (Friday Oct 20, 1978) that a Kerns bread truck attempted to drive down Cumberland Avenue through the crowd that had spilled out of the bars and into the street. Big mistake. I couldn't find any pics on Google.

Drinking age was 18 - the Last Lap was in it's prime.

Somebody opened the back of the Kerns semi-trailer... all of the inventory on board was flung into the crowd. The mob climbed on top of the truck. Made the Kiffin mattress burning incident seem mild by comparison. KPD shut it down and arrested anybody that didn't leave the Strip.

I was there, my Grieve Hall roommate opened up the back of that truck! The Daily Beacon had a cartoon about it on Monday. Fun night.

(Budweiser had a football picks contest where the winner won 10 cases of Bud... our dorm floor (1st) filled out 100s of entries and we won the contest the week before the the bammer game and got the beer on that Friday night.... iced it down in garbage cans hidden in the shower stalls... and it was game on!). :dance2:

There was a pic in the paper with about 10 guys on top of the Kerns semi-truck and trailer. If that had happened today the truck driver would be world famous.

There were so many KPD cars out there... they had blue plastic covers over the lights on top of the cars that were held in place by spring clamps that were very easy to remove. Those blue plastic covers made great popcorn holders!

This was the picture from my UT annual. I think it was the same or similar one that was in the newspaper. Luckily for me, I wasn't shown in the picture. My dad subscribed to the Knoxville News Sentinel and he saw one of my best friends in the photo. He asked me where I was and I told him I was busy studying!!!

haha Thanks. I was at the game, don't remember the aftermath. UT fans always dominated Saturday night, whether in Knoxville
or B'ham, win or lose. Bama fans were pretty much terrified of the whole lot of us.
