Texas athlete Treveon Johnson has been committed to Oklahoma since June of 2017, but the 2018 prospect is keeping his options open in the final two weeks of his recruitment.
The three star wide receiver and cornerback hosted Tennessee Head Coach Jeremy Pruitt and Defensive Coordinator Kevin Sherrer in his home Wednesday night a week after receiving an offer from the Vols.
The visit was really good, Johnson said. I got to sit down and talk with Coach Pruitt and Coach Sherrer. We talked about the fit and how they expect me to play. The staff that Coach Pruitt put together is a really good staff. Coach Pruitt is one in a million. He has a great mind on what he wants in his defense. He knows what it looks like to be a first round player. I have the utmost respect for him.
It was exciting to get an offer from Tennessee with the accolades and rich traditions that they have. It was really a blessing, and it kind of blew my mind. I never expected it.
The 61″ 180 pound athlete excels on both sides of the football, and it likely has a lot to do with his attitude toward his position on the field. Johnson says Tennessee is recruiting him as an athlete, but he doesnt have a preference where he plays.
They are just looking for me to come in, be an athlete and play early. It is really wherever I feel most comfortable. I get asked all of the time which position I prefer. Honestly, I just love to compete on either side of the ball. I am hungry for success. I am an aggressive player who is willing to sacrifice to get a win.
With just under two weeks remaining until signing day, the long-time Sooner commit has recently explored other options despite remaining solid to Oklahoma. Johnson visited Arkansas recently and will end his visits in Tennessee just a few days before signing day.
I am really solid with OU, Johnson said. I have a really good relationship with my coaches there. I didnt want to just let go of an opportunity to see other teams, though. Just being realistic with myself and my family, when you are fortunate enough to have an offer like Tennessee and playing SEC football, why not try and go visit and see what they are trying to do?
A long-time commitment will be hard to flip this late in the recruiting cycle, but Johnson knows exactly what he needs to see while in Knoxville for Tennessee to sway his mind in such a short time frame.
I am looking for a great environment. I have to feel like I am at home, Johnson. I need to feel I am comfortable with the people I am around and have an understanding with them that they have your back in the good times and bad.
