Broken Arrow, Okla. Rivals250 linebacker Gyasi Akem has never tried to hide his affinity for Oklahoma State. He grew up a fan and has always been open about that reality. And with that reality in mind most have given Oklahoma little chance of getting into the thick of his recruitment and furthermore were surprised by his decision to attend Oklahoma's opening day of spring practice/junior day on Saturday.

"I have interest in Oklahoma because they are an in-state team, that's my thing, I believe in instate guys playing for in-state schools," Akem said. "Don't get me wrong, instate would be nice but if I find exactly what I'm looking for out of state then that's what I'm going to do. I'm not going to limit myself if the right thing for me is elsewhere."

"Right now I would have to say that I'm kind of in between both, I'm still feeling them out, it's not really the football aspect I'm looking at - they both have outstanding programs. I'm looking at the other side, and with my major see who has the better program and who works better to get to where they want to be."

Some good offers, good to see the state schools have offered. I could see Mr Bob struggling a bit with this name tho hah.

Excellent!

Regardless of qualifications, his name is perfect for the "It's Time for Kesling to Retire" Movement :)

“I’m even with everyone,” he said. “I’m looking at the football team first and see what defensive system they run. I’m looking at the coaching staff and see if I can build a good relationship with them. I’m also looking to see if the school has my major (criminal justice). I just want to see if I can see myself at a campus for the next, three, four or five years or whatever it takes.”

"There are really four schools that are recruiting me hard right now. I'm hearing a lot from OSU and OU, and then Ole Miss and Tennessee are really recruiting me hard and showing interest."

“I would say that Oklahoma, LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss are recruiting me the hardest right now,” Akem told InsideTennessee.com. “Those are probably my top schools right now if I had to name some, but it all depends on the relationships I build with those coaches.”

“It is definitely big to get offers from those SEC schools,” he said. “That is really where you go to play against the best competition. Not that you can’t find good competition in the Big 12, Pac 12 or ACC, but lately the SEC has been the best that is for sure.”

Things with Tennessee have been really good,” he said. “I haven’t gotten a chance to talk to the coaches in person, but I talk to them on the phone all the time. I have talked with several of them, but I talk all the time with Coach Kempt. He has been my main recruiter.

Coach Kempt is a cool guy. Whenever I want I can call him and he calls me. I talk to him about football and ask about what they have to offer as far as academic programs. It has been good talking with him. I want to get over there this summer if I can and if I had to decide now I would probably use an official visit there.”

What stood out the most about Tennessee to me was Coach Kempt telling me they were the most winning program in college football,” he said. “I didn’t know that about them. Right now, with the new staff, they are just trying to get Tennessee back to where it used to be.”

Kempt is putting in a ton of work. If we close on some of these guys hell make a name for himself and be pursued for a position coach soon
