- Rivals Article"It feels really great to have a Georgia Tech offer and to know when it is time for them to send a written offer I will get one of the first ones," Watkins said. "I sat down with Coach Johnson and we talked and he told me they would love to have me be a Yellow Jacket. It was really exciting for me and my family."
The Jackets join South Carolina, N.C. State, Arkansas, Duke and Vanderbilt as teams that have offered the talented defender.
"Getting an offer from the school you grew up rooting for is a big deal to me and it is a really special day," Watkins said.
He doesn't have an offer yet. But when he gets it which he should he is an ESPN 150 for 2012, he will take the offer. I went to school with him. He's a big GT fan.
- ScoutScout’s Take: Watkins has really taken his game to another level in 2010. After working hard in the off season and adding around 20 pounds to his frame, he has moved into the top 10 for 2012. He is a very versatile defensive lineman too that stays very active with his hands. He can move well laterally, he has a number of moves off the ball, and he could play inside or outside on the next level. That will depend on the scheme he plays in. He can still play a little high and he needs to continue to develop strength, but I like his upside.
Recruiting: Over 10 schools have offered Watkins including Notre Dame and Penn State here recently. Georgia Tech was the school he followed early on and they have offered as well. He said he is wide open right now.
- ScoutI can’t really say who is on top or anything like that yet. I want to get more information on the schools, I want to see what each school can offer me academically, and just get to know more about my options before doing that.”
“Academics will be big for me and I want to go to a school that has good prestige in athletics too,” he said. “They do not have to be number one or anything, but someone that has a good and winning program. I want to go somewhere where football is big. When I went to Alabama and Tennessee for games this year, football was everything and I want to be somewhere like that. Being close to home will be a key for me too. I do not want to be too far away.”
- Rivals, 11/7"I would say schools like Alabama, I've been there already. My mom and dad were both impressed. Georgia Tech, along with Georgia. There's still a lot more places I want to visit and get information on. We were all impressed by all of the schools I have been to."
Three key factors will play into Watkins' decision.
"The main factors are going to be of course academic prestige. Whether football happens for me or not, I have to make sure academics are there for me. Second is athletic prestige, I want to play for a big-time football school. Third I would say, a school that is not too close but not too far away with maybe a couple of exceptions."
With Tennessee, they did not necessarily have the greatest year by their standards but you could not tell by the fan support at the game. I was at the Alabama game and it was almost full orange.
"I like Tennessee a lot," Watkins said. "I came up for the Alabama game this past season. It's definitely an experience that you have to be a part of. Their fan support is unbelievable. I have to look at their academics to see if they offer what I want to major in. I like them from a football standpoint a lot. Hearing Rocky Top a bunch of times is pretty great too."
