Engineer Gets 110 MPG Out Of '87 Mustang - Automotive News Story - WKMG Orlando

I would love to see this.

Pelmear, who lives in Napoleon, Ohio, has tweaked his Mustang to get 110 mpg, making the engine nearly five times as efficient as a traditional gas engine, he told the Toledo Blade newspaper.

Traditional gas engines operate at 8 to 10 percent, efficiency, while the engine on the Mustang, he said, is at 38 percent efficiency.

"I'm an optimist, and I think people need to know there is hope out there," Pelmear told the Toledo Blade. "That's why I decided to enter the X Prize race. I could have sold this [technology] off, but then people might not have seen it.

Pelmear told television station WNWO that the car hasn't traded power for miles per gallon. Pelmear said the car has 400 horsepower, goes well over 100 mph and can go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds.

FYI, the 2007 Shelby Mustang "Super Snake" with 600 hp barely cracks the 4 second mark at 3.8. The 500+ Shelbys are in the mid 4's. I do not believe the "3 second claim."

FYI: there are only three car models that break the 4-second mark and cost under $100K: Viper, 'Vette Z06, and the 'Stang Shelby Supersnake.

Unless the Mustang had 700 lbs removed and a drag suspension, it wouldn't be possible to hit 3s. My camaro can crack of some high 3s at the drag strip but thats on drag radials and it has 500 hp, weighing 3400 w/o driver. 400 hp on a 3200 lb 87 Mustang GT would net a high 12 quarter mile and high 4 second 0-60 if it hooks reasonably well on street tires.
