I like our strategy here: targeting Northern GA including big ATL area. We had the tradition to get kids from this area, and here we go!
The Volunteers created a stir on Friday when they became the first school to offer Gainesville sophomore linebacker A.J. Johnson, one of the states top 2011 prospects. Yes, thats for players signing scholarship papers almost two years from now. And no, it wasnt Kiffin, but Tennessee assistant Ed Orgeron who delivered the news
Class of 2011 prospect A.J. Johnson looked fantastic in the skill portion of the drills. Standing at 6-foot-3, 216 pounds with two years to continue develop, the ceiling for Johnson is unlimited. During one-on-one drills against running backs, he struggled slightly covering out of the backfield. That has more to do with his becoming comfortable with his athletic ability and less about his skill.
From his video, he sees the field well, shows good pursuit and displays plenty of speed. Tends to arm tackle and rely on his athleticism over technique.
I have seen enough arm tackling at UT over the years and that needs to stop. I guess coach O is looking at his athleticism as a start and will coach him on the proper techniques to make him a great LB.
