'11 GA CB Justin Coleman (TN Commit 7/29)

Just wanted to bump this thread.

Coleman is getting a lot of "hate" right now. But something needs to be realized by some of you putting so much stock in the "speed" of the '14 class. Coleman was considered very fast as a recruit. He was a Rivals 250 player. He had/has "talent".

I am wondering why no one else in the SEC but Vandy and Kentucky offered?

Beating out powerhouse schools for this kid like UAB, Louisville, and Georgia Tech.

I'm glad Coleman is ours--he was apparently a help to the younger guys this year and played well, most of the time, despite what anonymous experts say.

why is it that people take it personal when debating how a kid plays a ball or a route? It's saying nothing about effort or smarts. Nothing derogatory. He's just not as good at certain things than others. Welcome to life. Tackling doesn't seem to be a problem for him though. I just wish he would see and feel those plays coming more like Sutton does and make a play on the ball or at least hit the receiver as the ball arrives.

Sparty is dead on. There is fast, and then there is game speed fast. The fast guys don't always have game speed and it can not be coached. You can minimize the lack thereof by simplifying reads etc... but a player either has an aptitude for fast play or he doesn't. There are so many instances of two separate players with identical 40s and one looks really fast in a game while the other looks like he's running in mud. Guys like SJT want to blame everything on coaching because it's just easier than saying my 4* guy just isn't what I thought he was. UT has too many of those guys right now and I am so glad CBJ looks at the total player rather than just the measurables.

Edit: Oh and I appreciate any player that puts in the work and effort these guys do. I wish every one of them could be what UT needs to be successful but I am afraid we need a lot of new talent to get back to relevance.

His best position probably is safety, because of his tackling.

Coleman has all the tools, and is every bit as good of an athlete as Sutton is, but he is missing what is upstairs. He's not aggressive and he doesn't have that "dog" in him, as they say. Sutton has made more plays in his freshman season than Coleman has his entire career at UT. It's a shame too, because Coleman has a lot of ability, I just think he's kind of messed up in the head from so many bad games.

This is very typical of the majority of Dooley's recruits. Talent on paper/measurables, very poor play making/quick reaction ability. Hope that changes with this upcoming class.

as a matter of fact, just a few weeks ago helped a friend with a flag draft where 100 kids are running around with numbers. You see who can run, cut, who has balance, who can't run, who can throw, who can catch, who takes and angle on a kid vs who runs 10 yds behind a kid, who can track a ball in the air and who gets turned around very easily, who sees a cutback lane vs who runs right into another kid. Instincts are there from birth. Hence the word instinct.
I have 2 boys with instincts that are nonexistent in ball sports and have one son that got all of his brothers instinct traits combined. It's funny to see their differences when we play.
Cool story bro

Totally agree. There is a difference between somebody that is fast (40 times) and somebody that has that quick-twitch reaction time. Seems like we have taken kids that were supposedly "fast" but that didn't have that reaction time, and that to me signifies a lack of scouting/evaluation...which is not totally shocking with Dooley.

Coleman speed is fine but has terrible reflexes and instincts come game time. He gets burned or out manned on every deep ball.
