Document: Major resources needed for Obama Africa trip - The Washington Post

President Obama will travel to sub-Saharan Africa and the price tag for the trip clocks in between $60 million to $100 million. The Washington Post’s Carol Leonnig got access to classified documents outlining the trip. Update: The White House has cancelled the safari for this trip. ....

Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. A Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in case of an emergency.

Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bullet*proof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay. Fighter jets will fly in shifts, giving 24-hour coverage over the president’s airspace, so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane gets too close.

I don't begrudge the Prez having adequate protection and access to the best medical personnel if an emergency hits. Furthermore, I understand that travel is necessary for trade, goodwill, etc.
But the staggering amount of money it takes for the CIC to travel leads me to believe the taxpayers would be smarter to pay for the diplomats and heads of state to always travel here.

What's the purpose for this trip? I can't see any trade, security or benefit to the country for the POTUS going.

Call me crazy, but it may just be a vacation. But, I know. Presidents don't need vacations, right?

Oh, and both Clinton and Bush went on similar African excursions. So it is apparently tradition.

Not one that costs the taxpayers 100 million $$. But I'm sure he'll just charge it on his ChinaExpress.

It's not like the president is walking into a bank and taking out 100 million dollars. The money involved comes from all the military they'll use (salaries, weapons cost, fuel for 24 hour a day fighter jet protection.).

Sure and there is no better way to spend that money?

Look I understand the POTUS has to travel and needs to be secure when doing so. I just think there needs to be a clear purpose when he does travel. I see no purpose in going to that part of the world.

dude the WH canceled tours for kids, fired their 3 calligraphers each making $90K+ and cried like babies that the sequester would destroy the economy and cited the examples above as reasons why

I'm not exactly sure what you're defending here. I'm not mindlessly bashing Obama...maybe others are. We are bleeding money. 16 trillion dollars in the red...a dollar for every year since the big bang. Tradition or not, prior precedent and perks be damned, we have got to stop the ridiculous spending. Obama can vacation at the places reserved for presidential leave. He could also set an example that all of us could get behind...tighten the belt and skip the vacation like the little people do when there is no money in the family budget for R and R.
