Chris Martin - Yahoo! Sports

Searched for a thread on him for 15 min. Sorry if there is one.

ESPNU 150 defensive end Chris Martin (Aurora, Colo./Grandview) updated ESPN affiliate Web site WeAreSC.com on the status of his recruitment after regaining contact with USC.

"I talked to them, and that was awesome. It was cool to know that they still had me in mind, and (Carroll) said they really needed to bring in some linebackers in this class," Martin said. "After the talk, I would say USC is definitely in consideration as a possible option."

"I'm still Notre Dame-ing, but you never know," he said. "This is a crazy world and things could happen, so as a mature young man, I took the call realizing that you never know what can happen. People were talking about how I could talk to USC, especially being committed to Notre Dame, but I told the coaches I'm open to some schools recruiting me. I'm still firm with Notre Dame, but that USC is there as an option."

Martin also mentioned California, Tennessee and Florida (should the Gators decide to become involved) as other possible options
.

With quotes like that I would think our coaches will be in touch if they havn't already. Does anyone know any other news?

Our coaches have been in contact for a while. There was a rumor about 2 months ago that Martin was going to take an official to Knoxville...

I believe me and jmva had a little discussion about it in the "September 1st- Huge Day" thread...

I noticed in his quote usc wants him as a linebacker, would that be the same for us?

Thanks. LV

Privately he has considered some other schools and every time Notre Dame's defense gives up big numbers like they did this past weekend, that commitment will continue to weaken. I won't be surprised to see him switch late in the process.

This is from his Rivals.com profile for anyone to read:

Most Impressive: To this point, he has been sensational on special teams for a big guy running down field looking to take someone's head off. But his growth potential combined with athleticism is almost off the charts.

Conclusion: It's possible that he will end up a 6-5, 280-pound strongside defensive end with enough speed to catch any quarterback from the backside. Don't be surprised if he has an impact as a true freshman.

here's his other profiles:

I would be very surprised if he doesn't sign an LOI to ND, but I do expect him to "look around" (take officials). I also would be surprised if he took an official to Tennessee... I'm not even 100 percent sure UT has offered.

“I’ve just opened up my recruitment and keeping in touch with other schools, a select few schools,” said Martin, who said he's still a Notre Dame commit.

“USC, Cal, Tennessee and Florida, are schools I’m looking at. And I was thinking about calling up UCLA.”

Before the school year began, Martin wanted to graduate high school in December and enroll in college in January, but that has changed. He now plans on being at Grandview until the spring and enroll in college in the summer of 2010.

“I will not be a January enrollee,” Martin said. “I will enroll in the fall.

“Everyone will tell me what the best decision is for me, but it’s up to me with what I want to do, where I want to play and everything. So, by not graduating early, it gives me more time to put those factors into play.”

Per Scout... This is pretty big news. It looks like he has really opened it up especially since he was going to be an early enrollee but has delayed that so he can look at other schools. It looks like we are solidly in his top 5...

"i have a few schools in mind. I have one to notre dame in two weeks for the usc game, and i want to get out to see cal this month. Possibly i'll go to florida november 28th i believe for florida state, which is (tim) tebow's last home game. The last two are going to be between usc, ucla or tennessee. I'm not sure right now."

"right now i'd probably say that cal is really even," said martin of his commitment to notre dame. "them and ucla, but i haven't really contacted them too much, just a place i've been thinking about. Other than that i've been in touch with usc, florida and tennessee. I keep in touch with all of them because they're pretty much dead even."

Martin is a hell of a football player. I hope we get him on campus. I know Coach O really likes him. If we can get him here I think we can land this kid. We have continued to recruit him and I think it will pay off in the end....

I've been adament that we're in on Chris Martin for awhile now. I think he is seriously considering his options and we're def on his list. You have to remember, this guy was originally an EE but b/c of doubts w/ his commitment to ND, he's delayed his decision ala Bryce Brown. I believe we'll get a visit from him and once that happens who knows...

Btw, "X" mentioned him today in his recruiting update, along w/ T.J. Stripling. The surprise for me was that he didn't mention Corey Lemonier. I hope we're still after Lemonier. Those 3 DEs (Martin, Lemonier, Stripling) are the 3 we're still after despite a strong list of DEs committed and currently on our roster returning next season. We could end up w/ a sick 2009 DL commitment list if we pull a couple DTs like Thorton and/or Quarles, too.

Oh, and the belief is we're trying to turn Bruce Irvin as well, who'll more than likely be a DE and not a LB.

That is a solid post. Good work.
