finger crossed that Elander can make them work as a team, the talent is there

LSU suffered last season when their transfers from lower level guys (some also highly rated) could not handle the promotion to higher level.

I think the key is to have veteran guys and then sprinkle in transfers. I hope we have that.

I am comparing this to our current football situation. Too many football teams have started to rely on transfers for QB meaning they will be changing at this key position nearly every season. Tennessee has bit the bullet and will relying on two freshmen and will be in a GREAT position in coming seasons- especially now that Faizon has started well.

Transfers can be fool's gold as you build a program through high school recruiting that will supply stability.

Think back to the Delmonico days. I believe part of the up-and-down nature in last half of his time was an over reliance on JUCO guys. Sometime it works, sometimes it doesn't.

John Calipari relied on one-and-dones and it started to fail more than it succeeded as there was ZERO stability.

How many 5 stars are there in baseball each year or does it vary? I don't know. Still learning.

In football there is one 5-star for every NFL team, making a 5-star a predicted first-round pick.

Good observation. That’s why guys like Clark, Grimmer, and Grind need to take this team by the horns. That’s three guys that ought to hit over 17 HRs each and bat over .300. I want to see Grimmer come in with a new 15 lbs and ready to jack 20.

TN had 5 five star commitments in their 2026 class. They lost 3 to MLB draft so will have 2 on the roster. The 2 freshman five stars on the roster are Cole Koeninger (SS, P) and Gannon Grant (RHP). See details below from 2027 Roster Construction post.

Stone Lawless will provide much needed leadership as well. Agree 100% that the team needs Clark, Grimmer, and to have stellar seasons if they want to host a Super… I’d add Landon Mack and Jackson Estes to that list as well.

Thanks! I am wondering how many 5-stars are designated in each college baseball entering class, total. Or can the total vary each year? For example, in this class you just posted: We had 5-stars out of how many total 5-stars? And after the dust settled: we had 2 out of how many 5-stars total that chose the college route? By what you told me I can see that there were at least 45 5-stars (Gannon Grant).

Baseball is certainly more complicated by the fact that would-be freshman are taken in the MLB draft. I know every year we do not expect some of the people who commit to us to play college ball.

There’s no fixed number of Five Stars so it varies year to year. The 2026 freshman class had a grand total of 49 Five Stars. Source: Baseball America

Below is # of commits of 5 stars:

Five-Star Recruits

To start, here’s every school with at least three five-star commits from the 2026 class:

School5-Star Recruits
Vanderbilt8
LSU6

Heres an update as how many 5 stars made it to campus:
Vandy 3
LSU. 4
Miss State 2
UT 2
Texas 1
Stanford 2

as an FYI, both FL and Ark had ZERO 5 stars make it to campus.

Yes, Mack was on my original post, but l ft it to field positions. He has a lot of energy in the dugout. Need guys to take on his energy.
I love Stone. Friends with his family. There’s no one more I’d want to have a break out year with the bat. He’s due.

5 star baseball players go right to MLB. Baseball is a way different animal. You have to find the best high school talent that would rather go to college than go pro or who can improve their draft stock by going to college. It's a 3 year commitment. Junior year or 21 years old is all you get from most. The transfer portal is also different. There's a re-distribution every year within college baseball. The NFL is not taking high school kids. Football players have to go to college. Baseball has always taken high school kids. The big change is the facilities, room and board and support staff at the college level is way better than living on a bus and sleeping 4 to a room in a cheap hotel with a $25 day per diem.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, the tide is changing as more five stars (and four stars) are choosing college than ever before. Per my numbers above,14 of the 32 (-44%) five stars who went to the top programs (each had a minimum of 3 five star commits) actually chose college in lieu of MLB.
For the overall total of 49 five stars, 17 (35%) chose college in lieu of MLB

Obviously, full scholarships, NIL, revenue share, development, quality of life are all factors influencing more elite HS baseball players to choose college over MLB than ever before.
