Why should they put anything on the line for a meaningless bowl game with half assed officiating? All risk, no reward, so I can't blame them for sitting out.
Regular season results are more important for pro scouts than the bowls, of course, and we also sit our best players early in games that aren’t competitive. If you’re a senior and you need the bowl game for a team to notice you, you’re in a tough spot (most of those seniors do play). If you don’t need it to be noticed, you’re giving an opportunity for another player to get the spotlight at no personal loss to you, especially if you can use the time to prepare for draft workouts or the senior bowl, which is going to have more scouts than any regular bowl game. Why should they play in any nonconference game the entire season, based on your rationale? Why should they play in any game with half assed officiating? All SEC games have half assed officiating....
