Last time out, UT secured a 3-0 win at Western Carolina. Throughout the five-match span to start the season, UT has outscored its opponents 18-0. Additionally, the 5-0-0 start from the Lady Vols marks the best start in the Joe Kirt era.

MATCHUP HISTORY: Memphis and Tennessee have played just four times in history, with the Lady Vols holding a 3-1 advantage. Last season, Tennessee topped the Tigers, 1-0 after Mac Midgley scored the game-winner.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: The Tigers (5-0-0) are coming off a 2-1 win over Missouri. Freshman forward Ellis Kelly leads Memphis in goals scored (five), assists (three) and points this season (13).

YEAH, JOE: Tennessee soccer head coach Joe Kirt became the first head coach in program history to defeat a top-ranked team after the Big Orange defeated the Tar Heels to open the season. Additionally, Kirt now has three career top-five wins.

TRENDING UP: Tennessee's No. 2 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll marks the highest-ever ranking in program history. It is the first time the Lady Vols have won five consecutive games to open the season since 2021,

UP NEXT: The Lady Vols return home for a 1 p.m. ET match versus Georgia Southern on Sunday, Sept. 7. Senior day will take place following the match.

I need some suggestions for a rivalry name for our game with Memphis.

Like they have in college football.
In the medieval Scottish Gaelic, there was a name for the process by which wool was cleansed of its stink, stretched, and pounded, performed by women working together as a team. Ergo...

the "Waulking in Memphis."

Memphis Women's Soccer vs. Tennessee Preview: Game of the Century

#14 Tigers host #2 Volunteers

LAWRENCE DOCKERY
SEP 04, 2025

In the long and illustrious history of women’s soccer at the University of Memphis, the Tigers have never played host to a team ranked as highly as Tennessee. That includes hosting an NCAA Tournament game against LSU in 2021 and then hosting another NCAA Tournament game (again, against LSU) in 2023. So, when the #2 Volunteers visit the Billy Murphy Track & Soccer Stadium on Thursday it will be just another piece of history for Coach Brooks Monaghan, who has made quite a bit of history in his 26 years at the helm of the program. The hype around what has been dubbed “The Game of the Century” is palpable with local print media and talk radio devoting substantial time to discussing the game. The fact that it’s Memphis against Tennessee just adds to the tangible level of excitement in the city ahead of the clash between two ranked teams.
Memphis, of course, is off to a flying start. They’ve posted a perfect record of 5-0-0. Those wins include a pair of hammerings against Southern Miss (6-0) and Kennesaw State (7-0) as well as three wins against teams from the SEC: Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, and Missouri. The only blight on their season so far is that they lost out on another opportunity to get a win against a power conference team when this past Sunday’s game against Iowa State of the Big XII was canceled due to weather.
Despite being the youngest team that Brooks Monaghan has ever coached (only one senior and two juniors) they have acquitted themselves very well. Ellis Kelly has been a revelation, Elise Perron had her best game as a Tiger the last time out against Missouri, Taliah Brooks has made SportsCenter’s Top 10 Plays, and Abby Kudla has been a steady presence in goal. They might be young, but they have passed every test they’ve faced thus far. Thursday against Tennessee will undoubtedly be the toughest test they will face all season.
Even though they started the season unranked, Tennessee has very quickly climbed to near the top of the polls on the back of a perfect 5-0-0 record. They opened the season with a 2-0 win over reigning national champions North Carolina before demolishing Eastern Kentucky 9-0. Their next win was a gritty 1-0 road win against a Top 5 UCLA team. Since then, they’ve posted consecutive 3-0 wins against Loyola Marymount and Western Carolina. All told they have scored 18 goals without conceding a single one. The leading goal scorers for the Vols are Shae O’Rourke and Alivia Scott (with a whopping five goals each) but the name that might be most familiar to Memphians is that of freshman Ali Howard, product of Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis and daughter of former Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director and USMNT goalkeeper Tim Howard.

Storylines, notes and how to watch Tennessee soccer at Memphis

No. 2 Tennessee rounds out its four-game away stretch on Thursday night, taking on No. 15 Memphis.

The Lady Vols (5-0) have been relentless on the road this season. They took down the No. 4 UCLA Bruins at the start of this road trip, winning 1-0. On a roll to start the season, knocking off No. 4 UCLA on the road already.

They already have a plus-18 goal differential this season, a stunning number through five games this season — which includes five consecutive clean sheets from goalkeeper Cayden Norris to begin the year.

Here’s how to watch the match, followed by key notes leading up to the game.

How to watch Tennessee at Memphis

This top-15 matchup will be streamed on ESPN+ beginning at 8 p.m. EST, 7 p.m. local time. Fans can access the broadcast link through the Tennessee Athletics app or the UT Sports website.

A look at the Tigers

The Tigers missed the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time since 2017. Although the Tigers were ranked the entire year, their loss to East Carolina in the AAC Championship held them out. This year, the Tigers are a young team, having only one senior this season.

Despite a young team, the Tigers have looked promising this season. They’re 5-0, including a 3-2 win over No. 15 Ole Miss. Junior forward Ashley Henderson has been an offensive standout for Memphis, leading the team with 20 shots this season.

Last meeting

The unranked Lady Vols took down No. 5 Memphis at home last year, winning 1-0. Midfielder Mac Midgley contributed the only score, slipping in a shot in the 48th minute.

After an upset loss last season to Tennessee, the Tigers are back for revenge. History is on Memphis’ side this season, as the home team has won every four matchups between the two teams.
