“The belief on campus is that Pruitt is done at Tennessee.“ - John Brice

I’ve heard he wants out. So that would not shock me. He just wants to get the money settled and leave on good terms before becoming DC somewhere.

This is along the lines I’m thinking. I do think UT is using the investigation to negotiate a lesser buyout and both parties save their image. Trying to protect his image and future possibly JP agreed on a lesser buyout and that he would be the one to help thru the transition.

Hiring Steele makes me wonder if possibly that coach could be Malzahn and for whatever reason they are waiting to announce.

If Fulmer has his way, Kevin Steele or Phillip Fulmer will be the next head coach. I’m certain that no matter what if Fulmer makes the hire it’s one of those two options.

Fulmer has convinced himself that his coaching tree is tantamount to the tree of Bill Belichick.

He’s going to bury this program so far in its own s*it we’ll never dig our way out of it.
I agree with you overall. I do however think our options are limited right now. NCAA hasn’t really even started their investigation and it’s likely to drag out and be a black cloud for a bit. I think this will severely limit the pool of candidates we can attract. I do think we could do better than Steele, idk that we can get a better deal right now than Steele at 450k.

I do also agree Fulmer wants his guy to be successful. Steele is not just his hire, he’s also coached with Fulmer. I think any decent coach can have good success next year versus the schedule we have. I’m just putting that out there bc Steele with moderate success could be extended. I do think to achieve even moderate success gets less likely the longer Pruitt is in limbo. I would think if Pruitt isn’t gone next week it’s unlikely he will be gone before the start of the season.

Steele makes Malzahn almost zero percent likely actually.

Pruitt wont be the coach of UT after 2021.

Think my biggest problem with firing Pruitt at this point is that Fulmer is still the AD, and the AD is a bigger problem.

No chance we hire Freeze or Kiffin with Fulmer at AD. We'll likely get Kevin Steele. And while Steele is a good interim option, I'm not particularly excited about him as a permanent HC.

Maybe we get Jamey Chadwell. That's probably a best case scenario and even he's a pretty big risk given his limited track record.
Kiffin wouldn’t leave Ole Miss for Tennessee anyway.

I’m not saying it’s a certainty, but he would at least listen to our pitch and consider it for the right price point. The biggest issue, as has been said, is the AD. We can fire Pruitt, and I hope we do, but if Fulmer is still making the next hire the program will be in no better position than it is right now.

Fulmer is so out of touch with the college game that the average Joe could hire a better coach/staff if given TN’s resources. Fulmer thinks the 1980s-1990s CFB would be successful in 2021. He’s wrong.

Fulmer's just to be just as hard-headed about keeping Pruitt, just like we was with Sanders

Oh, if we were stupid enough to make him an offer he would listen. He would be willing to screw them just like he did us,, But we could never rest easy cause he would do it to us a second time. THUS we better not be that dumb to give him the shot.

Maybe I’m just trying to convince myself Steele will not be head coach.
I hear you. I understand. I think that’s probably what happens in the short term honestly. If it makes you feel better the terms are ultra short and open ended it sounds like. 2 years at 450k a year. Sounds like Steele is an insurance policy in case we can’t get out of Pruitt’s contract.

Agreed. But he’d be a fool to take the job imo.

Why, because he has done so well? Because he has beating GA, AL, and Florida at least once, Because his team has improved, Because his recruiting is next level, Because his player development is excellent????

Bull$$it
Nope, I just don’t think so.

The only other theory I can come up with is Pruitt actually wants out, may have made a settlement on his buyout and is getting ready to head to Texas or somewhere as a DC and less stress. Its known that he and Steele are very good friends, maybe he is trying to convince Henry T to stay as Steele is ushered in as interim as a solid for his friend and/or trying to leave the team as intact as he can.

Pruitt’s not a Bible teacher, not even close
