I never see much on Coach Anderson. You said he loves it here. Anybody know anything about his life beyond baseball in Knoxville? I sure hope this is a place he wants to stay for a long time.

I listened to an interview he gave on Basilio’s show about two weeks ago (before Ole Miss). It was then he mentioned that he wasn’t interested in being a head coach again. I’ll try to find and post it later. He gave a great, rare interview.

He and I have something in common, I am also not interested in him becoming a head coach again.

Here’s the link to Basilio’s show that has Coach A’s interview. I can’t pinpoint the exact time of his interview, but he appears in Hour 1. Edited to say: Timestamp of his interview is 1:06 (hat tip to OT for the timestamp)

I think we have to make it worth his while to stay. He has a daughter in college in Texas and a son who lives in Texas and plays for the Brewers. As with many of us, we are okay being away from our children if we can be involved in their lives. I think we need to do what it takes to make Anderson and Elander happy. Our pitching and hitting is vital to our success.

On several occasions when asked about his decision to stay or go, Tony V used the word "we" in stating how the decision was made.

I get the impression that the staff is a keep em all or lose em all deal.

Safe to say Tennessee wouldn’t be 27-1 & #1.

That said, I’ve long said there was no excuse for Tennessee to not be competitive in the SEC. I’ve been involved in high level travel ball in MT for almost 25 yrs. I know a lot of outstanding players who went elsewhere cause of mismanagement, poor recruiting, etc. I can speak totally from experience.

Many of these guys went to Vandy, Ga Tech Auburn, ole miss, etc. Few were recruited by Tennessee.

In the early 80s we didn’t take Baseball very seriously, Coach Whited I’m pretty sure was John Majors’ Brother in law. We got a few players off the Cleveland State team that was a JUCO National champ (Ted Carson, Greg Geren and Mud Martin), but we should’ve recruited the whole team since most were local kids. Guys like Larry Simcox, etc. went elsewhere - we probably didn’t budget much for recruiting back then.

This mind numbing... How can we let the best kids in our state get away. We have a lot of ballers here, and we need to keep them. I am in west TN and I see a lot of Ole Piss, state, and bama...

I understand what you’re saying, but there are all sorts of factors involved. Off the top of my head, first, no matter what, you’re not going to get them all because they’re only so many spots on the roster. Second, the program itself has to have a spot for the player at the player’s position. Third, great players are all over the place- do you want the good catcher from Memphis, or the lights out catcher from Raleigh? Fourth, things have to click between the player and the school. I’m sure there are other factors as well.

Delmonico basically recruited very few instate guys. He did get some studs obviously from Knoxville and a small # from Nashville but not much otherwise. One parent told me “he didn’t seem interested in us.” His son went to Auburn instead. I’ve told the story here before about the top player in the state going into his sr year and Larry Simcox came to Nashville to see him play. Simcox sat beside me and asked “which one is King?” I told him he’s not out there cause he’s at camp at Miss St. They didn’t even know who he was He signed with State. I could go on.

I watched Todd Raleigh at the state tournament one year show more interest in the hot dogs he was eating than a game that had 4 D1 players in it.

This is fair. I just feel like we need to put a fence around our state and recruit the best kids in it. Vandy is no longer the only show going in the state. The boys in Ktown have proven they are hear to stay. I just hate seeing kids leave our great state and play at other schools. Everything above is true, but we still need to keep the best kids in our state. Also, TN is a national name and we need to recruit the best all over the country. Seems like a double edge sword or I am talking out of both sides of my mouth, but i'm just sharing my thoughts. Good post.
