All three years we broke in (are breaking in) new QB’s. Seems for ‘94 and ‘00 fans gave more leniency to the team and program for that. I remember almost beating Bama similar to this past Saturday, with Texas and fans then not so mad. Both of those years we finished with eight wins. What has happened to our fan base since then?

Didn’t we beat Bama in 2000? It was Clausens first start I think.

The more money and the more attention, the brighter the spotlight and the bigger the expectations. All that big money comes with strings attached.

It's a zero-sum sport now. There's not much leniency to be found anywhere these days.

It’s a completely different sport now. There’s no more wait to next year when you have the ability to add to your roster via the transfer portal. If the portal had existed in ‘00, I guarantee you that Tennessee would have signed a top flight quarterback, instead of starting the year with just Suggs, Matthews, and Clausen.

Hmmm, I'm seeing a lot of "excuses" as to why fans are more impatient now. Seems "excuses" are ok for some but not others?

It's what I'm calling Cignetti Syndrome

Every fanbase in the country wants a Curt Cignetti to come across the mountain from the East at daybreak and do what he did at IU

I agree with OPs question. In a year where you are starting a TRUE freshman QB, when is 8 wins not acceptable?

-In 1994, injuries changed the course of that season, and it was obvious we were in a unique situation, and we had just gone 10-2 not 8-5
-In 2000, Fulmer was two years removed from winning a national title, and it felt he was allowed a down year to rebuild. He was a proven winner, Heupel isnt

The difference is that it's year 6 for Heupel, and we don't feel any closer to winning an SEC title or a natty than we were in year 1. Also, look at the numbers since November 2024:

-0-7 against ranked teams
-No wins against a P4 team with a winning record
-1 and 4 against SEC teams in Neyland Stadium

Doesn't feel right now like we are building toward something. It feels like a slow recession. In 1994 and 2000, it felt like those were bridge years. 2026 feels like borrowed time for a coach who has been slowly figured out. It's up to Heupel to change that feeling and finally beat a team with at least a winning record.

Silly question and you already know the answer but it doesn’t fit your narrative. The whole game has changed. NIL, portal, etc. The roster realistically flips yearly. There are no more rebuilding years. You’re comparing apples to lobsters.

The 94 and 00 teams had strong OLs and could run the ball on anyone. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case this year.

That’s easy. Same fans… more information and access to social media. Back then, you could have a stupid opinion and nobody would know about it. Now, you can share it anonymously and double down on it repeatedly lol.

I will say again. I'm seeing a lot of excuses. Thought we weren't supposed to have excuses.

Am I trolling? Sure am.

Back then it could all be blamed on recruiting. Now it can all be blamed on not spending enough money. Seeing the amount of money changing hands demands a higher set of expectations.

Back then you had an SEC title, and even a Natty in your back pocket a couple years in the rear view , to placate you during the lean times of 8 wins (in less games played).

Today, we are nearly 30 years post SEC title, and 20 years removed from even playing for one.

Yep, thats true $$$$$ but the Texas roster from whats been reported was somewhere around 12 Million dollars higher than Vols roster. if its all about the money it came out about right.

No excuses to lose to Auburn today. Let the season play out and judge it on its entirety.
Oh I agree. Glad we won. I was trolling those that say we have no excuses when I was reading excuses as to why other years were different when in the same situation. In this thread, that is.

a couple decades of terrible football and horribly embarrassing coaches is what happened to our fanbase

I am 60 years old; I would argue that I've been hearing this "If you don't hate the Vols you're not a true Vol fan" stuff my entire life. Nonstop. That's what I think.

The thing that you couldn't do 50 years ago was to say "let's get a proven winner". Nobody thought you could fire Johnny Majors one year after he won a natty. There wasn't this belief in money, that some how a more expensive team would solve it all. The environment has changed, not the fans. The fans are exactly the same - they feel like they become better-fan-than-you primarily by hating the team.
