I don't think it was that - just trying to expand the audience south. Whether it's a good marketing move is a different question but I don't see a conspiracy here.
Petty was the highwater mark for me followed closely by Prince. Bruno Mars was a huge surprise to me because I had no reference.
I thought this one was inconsequential - not offensive but not interesting.
I think the bipartisan consensus has to be that was of nearly zero entertainment value (hot dancers) and the only reason it will be talked about is people saying it was "so brave" and people saying "deport him" arguing back and forth.
