Difference between amateurs and those that are more serious. Thanks for the tip about beersmith, I'll be sure to have that at our fingertips next time. Curious how the rye will turn out. Think I went too light on the smoked grain. The rye aroma is very distinctive. Usually these have lots...

Taste is good, like a basic red. Think what we did was overcook the hops that was intended to give the IPA taste.

Tried to do an Imperial Red, basically a base red on hop steroid. Applied all the extra hops in reverse order, reading instructions is so underrated. Not the IPA-Red combo we were going for, but not a bad result. Good thing I like red heads. :) Fermenting a smoked rye right now...

When we tasted during the transfer to the carboy, could not tell any vanilla. Has a surprising hoppy after taste for a winter ale. Buddy and I got crazy and decided to drop tiny bit of vanilla and almond extract. We'll know in February.....:P

Never used vanilla beans, always used vanilla extract. I usually add at flame out. If you use secondary I would taste at that time and if you want a stronger vanilla flavor add some extract to secondary and rack over it. Thanks for the advice. We move to carboy this weekend. Will take a...

Tried doing a Smoked Pumpkin. 25% of the seeped grain was a smoked grain. Used about 2 tbles pumpkin spice in the last 10 minutes of the boil. Smell strong of pumpkin but the end result is the smoke overpowered any pumpkin taste. Anyone got advice on amount of pumpkin spice and time in...

    Snowboarding/Skiing/Trips/and all things snowsports thread

Utah still have screwed up beer and alcohol laws? Last time I was there in the '80's the beer was watered down and you needed a manual to figure out how to get a mixed drink. Skiing is strenuous, gotta be able to stay hydrated. :)

    Frohes Neues Jahr aus Deutschland!

One of the funniest times was listening to my German cousin try to explain to his buds an American HS football game he just watched. I tried to explain using beer mugs, salt and pepper shakers as props. It was like the Andy Griffith comedy routine about seeing football the first time. Years...

Sounds awesome, please share about how Jackson Hole is. Never been, considering this or Colorado or Utah for my daughter's introduction to skiing. Been to the other two.

SDV, On more serious note, had a mid/young-life crisis and decided I wanted to follow one of my passions and become a history professor, not really teaching but an expert on some obscure history subject. Quit my job in sales, moved to Chapel Hill, lived in a glorified walk-in closet and...

    Beer (and beer pics!)

Not sure if this was posted before or not. Fairly new brewery in SC - River Dog, near Hilton Head. Juniper Berry Saison is very good! Quest Brewery in Greenville - average to above average. Cool brewmaster, helped me solve the liquid yeast issue on my home brews. Quality control still...
