if my best friend died while he was serving over there and someone did this (church or no church), i swear to you i'd be going to jail for beating the dog s**t out of someone

I'm not defending what they did I wouldn't do it, but I thought we had free speech in this country to protest? Regardless of how insensitive it might be?

there are still possible consequences. for example John Rocker and Don Imus.

also a right to speak is not a right to be heard.

but there should be no legal consequences is the point. the whole hate speech standard is completely silly and arbitrary. speech is speech and there should be no legal consequences. If people don't have the decency to respect the lost, then they should expect to be ignored, not sued.

free speech is a right.....where it is spoken may not be. It would seem they could pass a law that these things cannot happen within five miles of a funeral.

Or beaten to death. Free Speech and common decency are different. Free Speech is guaranteed, but decency plays a role. These cults that celebrate the deaths of Soldiers should get their own "Free Speech", .40 S&W style. And no, i won't regret saying that.

"The Right of Free Speech", to me, means that the Governement can't persecute, or arrest, you, on the basis of you speaking against the Government. It does NOT mean you can have a "Bong Hits For Jesus" banner at school, or say "I hate N%$%$ERS because they are different"!

You should see what these people do. Louis Theroux of the BBC did a documentary about it called the most hated family in america. Watch it. I promise it will change your mind. What they do and what they subject their children to should be illegal.

I'm sure I would dislike them and not agree with their position, but that shouldn't change their right to free speech.

I feel the moron protestors have the right to free speech whatever it is. I don't agree with how they are trying to carry out their message. Furthermore, I'm 25 and I can guarantee that if I were the soldier who got killed and someone was protesting at my funeral, my cousins and uncles would dispatch that bull$hit quickly.

Bottom line, it's their right and we shouldn't want it any other way, but on the other hand, it wouldn't bother me a bit to see an eighteen wheeler jump the curb and splatter everyone of 'em.

With that said, I would go to jail before I let people do that at friends funeral, especially one who served in Iraq.

I would go to jail....easily....whether that be assault or murder depends on whether they resist

I am so conflicted, on the one hand I wouldn't be sorry if a tactical strike took out all of these inbred idiots, on the other I am all for free speech.

I will say one thing though, no judge (liberal or conservative) in his right mind will overturn this decision. If there is one thing all on the right and left can agree on, it's that we all wish the Westboro Baptist Church and the Phelps family would just shut the hell up. We get it, you don't like gay people. I personally don't like morons, you don't see me picketing in front of your church with signs that read "God Hates Primitive Baptists"

They should make it a Fed crime to protest any military funeral no ?'s asked! This crap pisses me off more than just about anything. These folks are defending OUR country and hello, our Freedom!! I know this will never happen because the D$MN ACLU would be the first to say no.What has happen to this country i ask myself everyday.

Yes, the ACLU would be the first, freedom of speech and assembly is a civil liberty protected by the Constitution. I want to say again that I think the WBC are complete idiots. Unfortunately they are idiots who protest completely within their rights. It's a slippery slope, you can't allow protests some of the time for some of the people, it defeats the purpose. Free speech with conditions is not free speech at all.

emainvol, I will agree with you free speech is free speech. the fact that these folks can protest this mans funeral or anyone in the military just gets my blood going. Please dont get me wrong, freedom of speech is one of the reason that makes this country great but its just stuff like this for some reason just gets to me in a bad kind of way.

These people are disgusting but I don't see the reasoning in awarding someone financial damages.

Speech should be allowed no matter how ludicrous. But there also has to be safeguards so you don't trample on the rights of other people.

Oh I agree, but it goes past the military funerals. Matthew Shepard's family didn't deserve what they were put through. Neither did anyone else they protested.

I wonder why it's just right leaning groups that are organizing counter protests against WBC? You never hear about GLAD or the ACLU jumping all over Phred Phelps and co.

If GLAD is protesting WBC's agenda then I stand corrected, but as it is it appears that the left is content to let WBC protest at troops' funerals and ignore it's militant, homophobic agenda.
