I think for the first time we've now reached a point where there's a generation of grown adults who have heard the word throughout their entire lives, yet an overwhelming majority have ever been in a situation where they've experienced first hand it being used as a legitimate racial slur as a part of bona fide old school racism. That is progress, as it seems to show our society is slowly becoming less and less racist.

As you said though, there are still multiple generations living who do have those first hand experiences and aren't likely to ever be able to separate the word from actual racism.

Bonafide old school racism is key there. I've heard it a lot, but it's almost always been out of ignorance in my opinion. And that comes from both sides. I think some of my generation loses sight of the actual horrible past that it comes from.

For instance the Riley Cooper drama. He was stupid. Sometimes stupid isn't outright racist.

Agreed. Like I posted, throughout my childhood, I heard the word used in a derogatory manner, but every time it was coming from a position of complete ignorance as opposed to actual hatred. I can't say I've ever experienced that first hand.

I would agree, but again, no sports part of it. That isn't a sports issue. I don't mind some sensitive things being talked about (I have no problem with Michael Sam being discussed because that's sports related) but if I want to watch/read something on that, I have plenty of other options. I want to go to ESPN to get a Spring Training update, not something on the n word that isn't sports related.

Haven't most of the N igger-related controversies in the last 10 years been sports-related? I would argue that sports is the ONLY place where it's being addressed as an active issue, because Polite America has pretended that we've moved on. A guy like Michael Richards (Kramer) uses the word and he's immediately dismissed as a crackpot. He gets branded as a Racist, capital R, case closed. But Riley Cooper and Richie Incognito use it and America has to talk about it, because we all know that they have to work every day with the black guys on their team. Sports is the only arena in which it gets treated as the active issue that it still is.

I agree with this.

So the Caps' second-best player and an awesome guy to root for is Nicklas Backstrom. He's spent his whole career battling allergy-related migraine headaches. He takes Zyrtec for it. He told the Swedish hockey federation that he takes it. They told him what and when to take. And yet he still got pulled off the ice an hour and a half before the gold medal game today for testing positive for pseudoephedrine, and apparently he's probably not going to get his silver medal.

Me: I'm happy the Olympics are over. All I cared about was curling and hockey, and the curling was a disaster and the hockey was a disaster. The Americans blew it. My favorite two Caps players both got screwed. F the Olympics.
Mrs Verc: Don't forget the basketball game yesterday. And remember how Everton lost in stoppage time?
Me: ....
Mrs Verc: I think there's a common thread here.
Me: FML. I need to write Backstrom a letter and apologize.

So I did. I enclosed 8 bucks for him to buy himself a drink. Go Caps.

He'll be super utility I think. Adam Kilgore is the best nationals follow.

He'll get PT when things shift around against lefties though.

If anyone would like to make a case for deep NL only sleepers, that's a discussion I wouldn't mind having..

Players that could slide into making an impact this year, or longterm guys you know won't play this year?

Either/or. I'm pretty set on prospects though. It's a dynasty league. I need someone to talk me into Neil walker/Alex Guerrero and a sorry third baseman. Or Chris owings winning a job in AZ
