Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

Petrino wasn't fired. Petrino wasn't handed a show cause. Petrino isn't on the NCAAs $hit list.

Really not many similarities at all IMO.

May not be similar but you can't deny that what Petrino did was much worse. If BP and Petrino coached the same sport at similar schools, I would want my child to play for BP over Petrino.

If you ask me the punishment handed by the NCAA to both coaches were not fitting. BP's should have been less and Petrino's should have been a bit more harsh.

One crime was soul less (Petrino) and the other was stupidity (Pearl).

Lol I don't understand how anybody thinks Petrino and BPs situation is the same

All I've heard was CBP's transgression was lying about the BBQ. Petrino started out lying about the wreck and who was riding with him until the media flushed out the truth. CBP came clean before he was proven a liar, Petrino came clean once he had no other choice. CBP lied about a feeding a junior recruit and his father with his own funds at a BBQ at his home, Petrino lied about using athletic funds to employe a mistriss.

Your right, their situations are not even close to the same. CBP made a terrible error in judgement whereas Petrino has a history of questionable actions.

Last time I checked the NCAA doesn't give a $hit if huh cheat on your wife, what part of that are people not getting?

I don't think the argument is about the NCAA, but about whether or not the university would re-hire someone with past issues. I think the comparison is that both coaches made bad moral decisions. That's where my question was coming from. Would UT have tighter rules from a institutional standpoint than L'ville? IMO, once the show cause is over, the NCAA can't do anything more to a school that hires Pearl than one that doesn't. I realize that they were different issues, but does lying trump using an institutions money to employ a mistress?

That's not what the argument is about. You have a great knack for side stepping what is really being discussed and trying to spin it into something it's not so that you can be right.

I will say that I find it in poor taste to discuss such during the season, but I love Bruce Pearl. I don't care that he lied about hotdogs. I understand what his lie could've done to the department. I understand the brass cares more about that than pretty much anything, murder included, but as a regular joe I feel like enough time has passed. He's served his time away from basketball. I don't like giving the best modern basketball coach of UT history the Pete Rose treatment because he tried to get away with a lie concerning hotdogs. In my opinion it's really a personal issue between Bruce and some nameless individuals more than a "what's best for TN basketball" issue. When it comes to the actual game Bruce Pearl is exactly what Tennessee needs. If it came to a public referendum Bruce Pearl would be our next coach. However, it's clear that he's being permanently black listed by some important people, so he won't ever coach in this state again barring several premature deaths or retirements. So, we'll have some leadership with a preserved sense
honor at a small cost of another half decade or two of a declining men's basketball program. Hey, there's always the Lady Vols.

Weren't several of you "Slive will never let CBP back in the SEC" guys saying the exact same thing about Kiffen?

Looks like the man behind the curtain isn't all powerful!

I don't care whether Slive is for it or against it. It's a horrible, horrible idea either way.

I know it will not happen at UT. But wouldn't be surprised at all to find him back in the SEC.

I would be tickled pink to see him back on the sidelines of TBA in orange!

I've never once seen that posted.

Besides, we are talking Bama football. They can do as they please right now.

There's also the issue of Pearl being fired vs Kiffin leaving on his own. And being an assistant coach vs being a head coach. And as others have pointed out, we aren't Alabama football.

Just out of curiosity, what is everyone so afraid the NCAA would do if Tennessee hired Pearl, camp out and find more secondary violations? Who cares?

And why would it be different if Tennessee hired him rather than any other school? The university had nothing to do with the lie, and that's the only real issue here. Severe punishment was dealt and served. I think it might be different had the school been involved and directly punished. But it wasn't.

I'm pretty sure even the NCAA realizes Pearl's punishment was harsh by today's standards. And as for Mike Slive, if he allows Frank Haith in the league I can't imagine why he would object to Pearl.

I'm not condoning or advocating anything here. Just curious as to the thought process behind the argument.

Well said Freak I don't know who pissed on Orangeballs's nutz but a lot of the fan base would be ok with UT brining Pearl back.

If Tom Jurich at Louisville can swallow his pride and forgive what Bobby Petrino did to them and hire him back as their football coach, why can't Dave Hart and Tennessee forgive Bruce Pearl for what happened when he was at UT, and hire him back?

Petrino will keep Louisville nationally relevant in football. Bruce Pearl would make Tennessee nationally relevant in basketball again.
