I'm not sure yet what I think we will do next year, but I am sure this prediction is unreasonable. They are setting themselves up for disappointment. We are taking 35 players this cycle, which should tell everyone what CBJ thinks about the roster he currently has. And I'm not sure it's fair to expect those 35 players to be All-Conference in their first year.
Think about this....with 35 new guys coming in and the guys that RS'd this year (about 10 or so? maybe more?),
over half of our 85 guys on scholly will be going into next season having never played a snap of cfb. I know a few of the guys that RS'd this year played a few snaps in the first 3 games or so, but still.
Also, speaking about what CBJ thinks about the current roster, his comments recently about how tough this offseason would be and how he's gonna find the guys that will give their all for Tennessee makes it pretty clear to me that we'll be seeing quite a few guys deciding to go elsewhere. We've actually already started to see it with Dallas, Posey, and the new rumors about T Smith leaving. I hate to say it, but for the most part, the more of DD's guys that leave the better off we'll be.
We do have some key starters coming back (assuming AJJ stays & add Maggitt) at LB, in the secondary, at WR, and we'll have to wait and see about QB. If we're gonna overachieve next year (8 wins or more?) we're gonna have to have all the juco's come in and start or at least be solid contributors, these Fr (true or RS) will have to add solid depth and not play like Fr, and we'll need some of the new guys (juco, RS Fr, or true FR) to be impact players. Impact players like Jamal Lewis, Deon Grant, Eric Berry, Kelly Washington, Charlie Garner, CP, etc. They don't necessarily have to be as good as those mentioned bc those are some of the best impact guys ever at UT but we need a few to be somewhat close. We need difference makers. Period.
We've got a ton of wholes to fill and will be young and inexperienced in several areas. I wouldn't expect too much with over 50% of 118 playing their first year of cfb in the sec. Then again, as talented as a lot of the new guys are, who knows? They may surprise us. I wouldn't bet the farm, though.
