First off, this isn't directed towards you but...
That's great and all, and I sincerely root for the players to improve but, this is a team sport, I'd MUCH rather see more wins than more individual improvement.
Anyone who rationalizes how another potential five win season next year is ok because Vereen or Dobbs or whoever improved, is reason enough to accept the status quo is a moron.
Butch deserves time to recruit his players and implement his season but I'm not going to accept another losing season, period.
To quote a line from one of my favorite movies:
"What is losing? Losing is a disease...as contagious as polio...as contagious as syphillis....as contagious as the bubonic plague...but ah! Curable!"
I'm ready for to be cured, with or without this staff. I'm loyal to UT first and foremost. Coaches get paid to win. I want results ON the field.

Sorry bruh, I keep trying the math, but I can't seem to get past 5 wins. You gotta have 6 to party on.
Good solid post ...... we need wins and NO MORE 7-5 seasons ... we are TENNESSEE and we should NEVER have a year where we miss a Bowl game NEVER...
We had three REAL shots at winning one more game imho Ga, Fla and Candy and let them all slip away... we CAN NOT have this type of performance at TENNESSEE

That's why I laugh at the idea of not scheduling respectable OOC games. Oregon wasn't near the issue people are making them out to be. We completely **** the bed against 3 VERY winnable SEC foes. And they're gonna be very beatable next year too IMO. Perhaps we should drop them too and become ACC, smh.
If we only win one out of those three we play one more game this year..we win two and we play in a better, and we will all three and get a REAL BOWL ha ha
And we SHOULD HAVE won at least one of those three
Ok, I said I would do a post season update. This is not for the second half of the season, but the season in it's entirety. The previous analysis was given between the UGA and USC games. I won't be as in depth, but here goes.
Quarterback: D+ Our situation at QB did not really improve. The brutal schedule is mostly to blame. Worley got a win at USC, then got injured, Dobbs had his flashes, and added to the run game, but never showed consistency. Typical freshman struggles.
Running Backs: B- The team rushed for over 2,000 yards, with Neal gaining over 1,000. Neal and Lane averaged 5.2 and 5.3 YPC respectively. Sometimes, they just couldn't get the needed yards on 3rd down, putting the pressure back on the defense. The AL and Mizzou games were not kind.
Offensive Line: C Let's be honest... the "strongest" unit on our team had some problems with the strongest opponents. An ok performance on the season, but many of us were expecting the best line in the country, and that, it was not.
Wide Receivers: C- North came on big. Pig had his moments, but his fumble against UGA and block in the back against Vandy, negating the TD, count against the unit significantly. Pig also disappeared for huge portions at a time. During 5 games, he had a grand total of 56 yards. Your #2 guy has to do more, and the coaches are partly responsible here. Josh Smith continued to drop everything, and Croom pitched in with some nice catches, but hasn't yet reached the level we are hoping for. He still has time. The weakness of the unit was illustrated after North was injured.
Kicking/Punting: B+ Palardy drops his average a little bit on the season with his weak Vandy performance. Yes, today was beautiful, but he also missed a PAT. Great season for MP1.
Defensive Line: C+ I feel like the DL improved a bit in the second half of the season. Jacques Smith's INT for 6 and Corey Miller's 4.5 sacks today were great moments. McCullers never realized his full potential. Walls had flashes, and so did Hood.
Linebackers: C AJ Johnson began to play with a bit more violence, but Brewer began to regress a bit after a solid first half to the season. Sapp quietly had a solid season, averaging 5.5 tackles per game.
Secondary C: Cam Sutton did his thing, and no complaints there, but the interceptions began to dry up in the second half of the season, and we were often exposed with our lack of speed, poor angles, and poor coverage. Randolph and Sutton had a good season, though Randolph as by no means perfect, but we need speedy help in a hurry for the rest.
Return Game: C Devrin returned in the second half of the season, and took care of the ball, but did not take one to the house. My previous analysis said I would be happy to see Jacob Carter stop fair catching the ball and for Young to get his 7 yards per return. He ended up averaging 7.8 On kick-offs, he averaged 25.9. A whole lot of average, but at least he's somewhat consistent.
Kick Coverage: C A pretty good performance by our coverage teams this season, but that Auburn game...
Coaching: C Folks didn't like my grade last time, let's see how they like it now... There were entire games where the offensive game plan seemed like it had 0 continuity. Yes, we had to break in a new QB, but then wouldn't you lean on the running game more? Mizzou and Auburn were maddening games. Then, the fake FG against Vandy...
On defense, we never could handle a QB with legs, except Connor Shaw, who really isn't as mobile as his reputation suggests. We gave up an average of 39 PPG against ranked opponents. Jancek needs to figure some things out.
Butch kept the team motivated and focused through the season, though sometimes they lacked intensity, they seemed to give the effort. With no bowl game to play for today, the team came out and did it's job, and that is a testament to the coaching staff. I anticipate that the coaches will be much improved next season after getting "broken in" to SEC football, and that the new influx of talent will keep us on the right track.
I posted this in the bye week thread, but it didn't get any discussion. I think there is a boycott of threads that I have started.![]()
Panic hire? Ok
The only thing that keeps me hanging on is this recruiting class and this forum. Otherwise I believe I would probably give up UT football for Lent after signing day.
I simply cannot stomach the rationalizations and distortions of truth. They are chunking out $6+ mill in coaching compensation and the largest recruiting budget in America with top three football program facilities and unsurpassed fan support to have 4 losing seasons in a row? Even Butch was a panic hire and Hart may have gotten lucky, unlike Hamilton who struck out with his panic hires.
There are numerous systems to play the game of football that work equally well and it doesn't matter which system you use as long as it is reasonably current. It's about the horses and jockeys. The class of horses headed to UT is a winner. I want to see the jockeys take a step up and learn from their mistakes. To win they will have to make less of them and more of the correct moves at the right times during the race, including the choices of which horses to ride in which race. I really, really want them to do just that.
So get me through signing day with a top five class and I can live to see another season.
When you go after several higher profile coaches that publicly and embarrassingly turn you down including one that Cheek makes a personal visit with; then pull an all nighter with a guy that danced with Colorado before telling his current employer the day before that he was staying - that is the very definition of a panic hire.
It's possible for a 5-7 team to go to a bowl game. I don't believe that we'll fall under the right requirements for it, but it still is possible
