Most of the staff is out on the road recruiting this weekend. I liked this about Thig from VQ...

Look for Tommy Thigpen to log some time in North Carolina and again Nashville. Interestingly, Thigpen was given the option to stay in town for part of the weekend as he has been out more than any other coach. But Thigpen declined that option saying there was recruiting work to be done and that he needed to be on the road.

I applaud TT. Know to be driven and competitive, working with a HC that's equally so fuels that fire. That commitment and dedication will help elevate this program sooner rather than later.

It's becoming apparent that Butch has realized that his athletes are worse than even he thought. That's why you see him looking to add more pieces to the puzzle and now.

so besides Thig where are the other coaches at this weekend? Somebody is in Florida and someone went to see Big Charles correct?

Or watched the tape of the punt team vs Auburn.

Get some athletes on the field. Am I the only one who
hates the 3 man protection on the punt unit?

Watching 300lb lineman flailing in the open field trying to
tackle Auburn skill players, not good.

I'm no football talent evaluator, but that's been my take as well. I thought we had a light roster coming in, but I didn't realize it was as bad as it is. We are nowhere near the league of Bama, Auburn, and Oregon, among others.

Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the guys we have - they have heart and they've been through a lot. But I'll be glad when the level of athletic ability improves. It's going to take more than one recruiting cycle, unfortunately. But this class is going to help us tremendously.

Word around the Boro is Saban putting on the full court press on Jack Jones

Good. It's always nice beating out Saban for a recruit each cycle. Be glad when we have a roster that can beat him on the field as well.

Yeah i'm with you. Next year should be much better. But you're right, it's gonna take a couple years at least to get the Dooley residue out of orange completely.

But when we do it's gonna be fun. Heck next year is gonna be fun.

I really just need Butch Jones to figure this out. Football has just been too depressing.

I have a feeling that only the top 20-30 players on this current team would be on a normal UT roster. No real knock on the other guys, but more of a state of the program. The sad thing is that we've been that way since the 2008 class.

Agreed. I just hope the fanbase gives him time. I'm not sure if he can win us a national title, but he can definitely recruit and develop players and field winning teams (based on his track record). We could use some coaching stability to get the program back in shape.

I'm excited about next year. I'm not letting my hopes get too high, but I think we should be more competitive and 8 wins may be achievable.

That's my take as well. Our roster is a little deceptive (and I admit I was decieved coming into the year). What I mean is that we might actually do better in the NFL draft this year than we have in a number of years. We could have between 5 and 7 players drafted, depending on how everyone grades out. I think Neal, James, Richardson, Stone, Fulton, McCullers, and Johnson all have a shot (and most have a great shot). There could be others. Palardy likely will make a squad somehow.

That leads you to believe we could be a winning team. But the talent around them really isn't great. Some of it is too young, but the rest wouldn't see the field for any of our rivals.

Sad. But that's what coaching instability (and incompetence) do to you.

had several NFL guys last year as well - it is deceptive to think you have that many NFL guys yet still seem untalented

I think the reason is they are concentrated at certain positions (WR/TE last year, OL this year) or not in their most natural fits (big dan clearly out of position, and i think AJ is a better MLB in a 3-4, and the OL this year is not in best scheme fit)

so while the team as a whole is not talented there have been these position groups that are

I agree. The older guys on O did a really good job last season and many will make solid pros.

I just think a good part of this is having the experienced players run a system that is foreign to what they were recruited to do and are capable of doing well. I still contend Butch got a pass from Hart to run his system regardless of the result so that the younger guys would have a leg up going into 2014 and beyond. That may be totally off base, but it sure appears to be the case.

They need to go ahead and run Munchak out of Nashville....like, yesterday!

I never understood the hire. They get rid of Fisher more or less because he had been there for so long and things were stagnant. You would think in that scenario they would clean house with the coaching staff and get a fresh start, not promote from within and basically change nothing.

They need fresh blood in there badly.
