'14 TN DB Rashaan Gaulden (UT Signee 2/5/14)

Pushed but not passed...he's too important in alignments and you see a drop off immediately when he's not in the game

I agree with this.

It would be helpful if we found a guy who could step in if for a game or two if Randolph is injured again though.

Guys need to beat out Coleman and Toney. McNeil needs to wrap up or he'll find the bench in a hurry.

I should rephrase: it won't necessarily be a bad sign for the long term if none of our guys displace Coleman as a starter, but we absolutely need guys to contribute immediately.

I'd agree that Toney is another deal completely though. It would be discouraging if no one we bring in or currently have on the roster is able to pass up him or Swafford at nickel.

Coleman needs to be replaced immediately. He looks the same now as he did when he was a freshman. Hasn't progressed one bit.

He does do some things well though, and will likely be a role player for us next year at least.

My only point is that we shouldn't get down on the freshmen we have coming in if none can steal the job from him. Coleman is limited as a cornerback, but he does have experience on his side.

If Gaulden/Evan Berry were also EEs I might assume Coleman loses his job, but Payne is probably better suited in the slot and both he and Moseley will face some size limitations going into year one.

I think we'll have someone who will steal snaps from him. Riyahd Jones could do it by the end of the season of he returns to health, but if you're expecting Coleman to lose his spot as a starter to a freshman by week one, you'll probably be disappointed.

What does he do well that a freshman can't do?

That's a loaded question because we don't know how well any of our commits play in college yet.

I agree that Coleman physically doesn't stack up. I'm just saying don't get down on our freshmen next year if they can't beat out a senior with 3 years experience starting in the SEC

Next year will be a complete over haul of our secondary except for Randolph and Sutton

The athleticism alone in this class is extraordinary. The entire secondary will be pushed as it should be --- talent competition raises the bar either you rise or you get left behind.

The incoming class will be part of the 2 deep rotation but, IMO McNeil, Randolph, and Sutton will be our starters (at least) to begin the '14 season. Coleman may be as well but as Nickel.

"“Independence outlasted Rossview 35-25 on Friday night in a crazy Class 6A playoff game that saw neither team willing to give up on its season. Rashaan Gaulden's 80-yard touchdown catch and run early in the fourth quarter gave Independence the go-ahead score, and Vic Wharton's halfback pass to Gaulden for another score with 3:49 left in the game sealed it for the Eagles, who advance to play at Overton next Friday in the second round" (Independence overcomes errors to beat Rossview).

Just out of curiosity... How many tackles does Rashaan have on the year? He has to be getting close to the state record for tackles in a season. I know just from this game and another he had 60 tackles.... Some kids can't get 60 in a season let alone 2 games.
5 star talent with a nose for the ball. I'm glad he wants to be a Vol! :baloon:

And Wharton has to have the national record for returns. 21 for a career and 5 on this season 1000 yards rec and 1000 yards returns and approaching 1000 yards rushing. I swear Wharton and Gaulden are going to be absolutely ridiculous on the Hill.

You decide for me. Denico Autry or Damien Jacobs?
