Chevis was pretty darn good at recruiting LBs. Thig is a boss though, and we better pay the man.

He was a pretty coach, but as I remember it, Chavis couldn't recruit a horse to water. Maybe "wouldn't" is a better word. Seems recruiting never was his thing. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

No...you're not...It's a recent phenomenon...before this season, when he was listed as one of the top recruiters nationally, I wondered if they were talking about OUR CHIEF...he was always more of a teacher under Fulmer....Maybe our former HC took more credit?

I thought he just didn't like travelling. From what I remember he was a great recruiter on campus.

SCHS thought Sevayus Robb (NOT Tre Malone) was clear to play and he may or may not have been. It's as simple as that.

...and the QB club building houses to get players???? :post-4-1090547912::post-4-1090547912:

...you're killing me over here.:mf_surrender:

I know... SC hasnt even got a fieldhouse and they're dropping houses for obscure non relevent players..Much butthurt with him.

Chavis was clearly one of the weak links in recruiting on Fulmer's staff. He's a perfect fit at a place like LSU where it is so incredibly easy to recruit and you have to put in minimal effort to pull big-time talent. I remember people close to the program saying he just didn't like to recruit and would rather coach 'em up and leave the recruiting to other staff members. The problem is at Tennessee everyone on staff better be able to recruit well. He was also the one who got all pissed off and caused a bunch of dissention on the staff when Rodney Garner started getting a lot of publiclity for his recruiting ability.

Chavis did recruit South Carolina pretty well. About all he ever did at Tennessee though.

I believe Dan Brooks also recruited South Carolina (along with NC) on that staff and he was the one responsible for landing most of the elite guys out of there like Shaun Ellis and Albert Haynesworth.

correct! he was our "closer" with Defensive recruits when we got them on campus. He's always had recruiting chops, he just wasn't needed as much back then. LSU seems to be utilizing him more than he ever did here.

Notable recruits for Chavis were Robert Ayers, Jonathan Hefney, Kevin Burnett, and Kevin Simon.

Chavis was not the lead recruiter for anyone and still isn't. One of the better developers of defensive players, which helps I recruiting. He was not on the road dogging up and recruiting players full time.

I guess it depends on your definition of recruiting. Yes players came to UT partly because of Chavis, but not because he was not out grinding on the road, but because of his coaching ability.
