I like peterman. He has more upside, and don't have to worry about burning redshirt. Id like him to play with the 1s. Maybe he'll look terrible, but his passes will be less helen keller-ish
Exactly, no one has seen these guys play. Dobbs has been the more hyped of the two but until they can be seen on the field in a real game there is no way of knowing.
Here's Butch's opinion: "Whatever quarterback has the best week of practice is going to be the starter for Tennessee when we play Florida. If that means a freshman quarterback, that means a freshman quarterback. Well have more quarterback run in to our package this week. We just need to find ways to generate big explosive plays and if thats Josh Dobbs running the read option or Riley Ferguson, thats what well do to create big plays. Thats going to be our focus and preparation this week (Florida Week Depth Chart: Door Open for Freshmen QBs | VolNation Blog).
Based on those statements, it sounds like the quarterback competition is officially wide open again. Unequivocal reference to integrating the quarterback as more of a running threat, hopefully, will appease the masses.
IIRC, I saw a comparison of new freshman QB's who were excelling this year on ESPN or possibly during the Oregon game. Basically talking points about how there are 5-6 breakout frosh this year who are predicted to be stars. Where I saw it I forget...but who knows, throw one in and see if he goes Johnny Football for us...
Following the 1998 National Championship with Tee Martin at the helm, the Vols decided to go the other direction and only recruit immobile/slow/flat-footed/average passing QBs to lead them to future National Championships. It worked so well in the prior 30 years before 1998 and it appears to be working great for the next 30 years post 1998.
I think it would be nice to see Petermen start and grow with Croom and North. They are the building blocks to our offense for the next few years. What better time than now.
