Da Reds thread

Still think Votto is worth his contract. Ten years was too long.

And honestly I think you'll guys regret the Brandon Phillips contract more. And while left field is problematic right now, Ludwick had a good year in 2012 and every team would have brought him back after his season. You couldn't know about his hurting his shoulder.

JMO

no but luddy tanked toward the end of last year, at 7 mil there were some better players out there. votto in my opinion is not a top 10 player in baseball this year. maybe top 20 but i know i could find 10 players i would rather have.

Hamilton doing exactly what I hoped he would do after being called up. Was a great game and bailey pitched a good one.

And you think baseball like it's the 1950's and are oblivious to any progress in baseball thinking while believing you are completely right. Even though you are criticizing your best player and one of the ten best players in baseball instead of looking at the other problems on your team.

Guess we all have our flaws.

Take him, please.

I am always flawed as you say. So we are in agreement on one thing. On the other hand you never admit you are wrong. The stats are your sole authority.

And you are right on one more thing - he is my player. I am a Reds fan from birth. My father was one of those old timer minor leaguers from the - wait for this - OMG! - late 1940's. I grew up playing against former Reds and other MLB players, one of which is in the HOF, as well as playing D-1. in college. I do know what it takes to play well and win at the game of baseball. Not always right - but know what I see on the field and in the dugout.

Votto is making north of $20 M to produce approximately 80 RBI's this season, and has a BA, OBP, and RISP in decline at the most crucial part of the season when he is depended upon to be a leader on the field. He has been brain dead on D and on the base paths many games in the second half. He is not a leader in the clubhouse. He is respected, but not a leader.

So Champy's response as to what he would rather have is on point.

This is one thing I agree with them doing. Bring him in slowly to do well what he knows he can do. Don't mess this up because he can be a major game changer going forward.

nice game tonight. bailey when he has his fastball hitting 96 to 97mph he is tough to beat.

Homer and Mat match up better against the Cards than any of the others. They eat up junk and can be handled with a power pitcher with a good slider. Need to sneak a third win out of this series. Hopefully Bronson can get it done and the team shows up with their bats working.

He has to only look at stats and articles. Maybe watch a game once a month or so. He does not follow the team on a regular basis or he would know everything you and I have said for himself.

How soon they forget that Luddy tailed off at the end.

Long game to lose. Especially when Bronson pitched so well. Hamilton repeated as a game changer only to not matter in the end. I hate losing like this.

Broken record. What does 0-7, 3 K's, 3 LOB, one defensive error give you? A pretend super star name Joey Votto. Add in Dusty rationalizing his masterful use of his bench. lol. This team is 20 games under .500 without Bryan Price and the pitching staff.

Get lucky with the play-in game is about all that's left.

22.5 mil goes 0 for 7 and costs us yet another game with a horrible error. he is worth every penny. i would trade him in the off season

Exactly what obligation does he have to be a "leader" in the clubhouse?

When he signed a contract for over 10 years leadership came with it. His image went up all over everything Reds - TV, radio, billboards, buses, advertising, game promos, etc. That's not just for idol worship by the masses. That is saying he is the face, the model of everything Reds.

When Dusty, Bob C and Walt J said he is the team leader numerous times in the media through the years. The bosses say so. I read the news on the website and Enquirer nearly every day during the season.

When the fan base that pays the money to fund the thing want him to be a leader. It is not lost on them.

He is a leader. He can be an effective or ineffective one.

Tonight - he is leading by example. Good to see. They need him to earn his money down the stretch.

He is having a good night in this one and I still feel the same way. I think he will average 30 HRs and 90 RBI's with a good OBP and be in the 10-20 best players for a few more years. I think you trade him while the perception of value is still high.

Got chills and a little emotional when the great 8 starting taking the field. Damn I love the Reds!!!

It was a special era. Can you imagine what would have happened there if they had the pitching staff of some of the other playoff teams?

Boom!

Need some bad luck to go the pirates and cards way. Really want to avoid a play in game and time is running out.

I agree. The Cards and us are the teams with momentum. The Pirates are wearing down. They have sustained longer than I expected they would. So my hats off to them for their improvement.

But as usual it probably comes down to the Cards and us. Whoever can stay hot the longest will take it.

Just win. No more silly experimentation and Dusty brain fades like having Soto come in as a pinch hitter, especially in clutch situations with Luddy on the bench. Soto may be something someday, but now is not that day when he strikes out on 80% of his opportunities.
