'14 TN WR Josh Malone (UT commit 12/4/13)

Size-Strength-Speed
This is a load of a prospect in stature. Has great height and very good bulk with a long wingspan. Plays with explosive strength and has very good acceleration and deceptive top end speed, but he builds to it.

Separation Skills
Shows a subtle delayed burst off the line to lull defenders to sleep. Adapts well to what he sees and is a physical competitor. Has quick feet and very good body control to give definition at the break point and has double move acceleration.

Ball Skills
Catches the ball easily when he has to reach and protects it well with his body when it's thrown below chest level. Elevates well for the high throw. Can win one-on-one matchups even if not separated due to length, strength and competitiveness.

Big Play Ability
Is a deep threat and has run past and through coverage speed. Gets good yards after the catch on underneath throws. Is hard to catch when he has a step and has shown speed to the edge.

Bottom Line
Malone is not a polished guy yet and he wins on size and athleticism. Needs to refine his route running structure with more discipline and attention to detail. This is a player who could play inside or out and should develop into a very competent red zone threat. We need to track his top end speed, but he is a BCS caliber prospect.

"I think some of that Malone stuff may have been overblown, but I'm not sure what Barton said so I don't know. I think Malone will come out with his top five sometime in the next week or so and I'd look for Tennessee to be in it.

I think there's been a lot of bad info going on with Malone from all over the place. Some people have called him a Tennessee lock and some have said Tennessee is out of it and neither are true or have been true at any point.

Malone has always maintained he's going to take his time, and he has, and will likely take all five official visits and I expect Tennessee to be one of those."

Good stuff Ron---I really kind of gave up on us landing this kid. I still think he ends up elsewhere. Unless something crazy happens I think we are done at WR.

I don't think anyone here would pass on Malone or "didn't want him anyway," but neither do most people think he's a must get. But somehow people keep saying that others are crazy for not wanting him or thinking he's a must get.

I disagree with some on here. Malone is extremely talented. I would love it if we got him.

However, I would hope our remaining spots are reserved for defense. We need lineman in a bad bad way.

I agree most spots should go that way however we do not turn down malone or dupre or even jackson for a spot

I saw this kid play last year live and he quickly stood out. Crisp route running and he created seperation off the line very easily.

He was really thin (kinda like J Hunter-ish) when I saw him so hopefully he's added some bulk.

"Josh Malone is still a top priority for the Vols and look for him to come out with a top five soon that will almost certainly include the Vols. Look for several other SEC schools as well as two ACC schools to make the list as well."

Good news.

But VQ's wording is Wierd. Top 5 = vols and 2 ACC schools. Makes three of the five. Then it will also include SEVERAL other sec schools?

Lol. Barton Simmons. What an idiot.

I'd say his final 5 will be

Georgia
Tennessee
Florida
Florida State
Vandy

It looks like we will just be another hat on the table IMO. I believe he said we wouldn't be receiving one of his 5 official visits (not 100% sure about that) which doesn't seem like good news. But maybe he just wants to use his officials on schools that aren't as easy for him to get to on his own dime (just a guess). Either way I think this ship has sailed. My guess is he will end up at Georgia or Vandy. I think we all (apart from Vol74 lol) would like to have landed him but are more than happy with the guys we have committed.

I'd expect him to end up at Georgia, FSU, or Florida

His trainer said last year to watch out for Florida schools, And they always have pretty good insight, and he just visited Florida.

That would be a smack in the face if Ramsey went to FSU, and Malone went to FSU, Georgia, or Florida. We need to keep home talent in state, and out of Vanderbilt
