Talked to a Cincy fan about Butch

I met a Cincinnati fan last week while at a conference in Charleston. We talked football for a bit, and I asked what his opinion of Butch Jones was. He said that he believes him to be a good recruiter, but warned me that he's likely to make a few in game decisions that will leave you scratching your head. I asked if that meant he wasn't a great X's and O's guy, and he said that's exactly what he means. He did say that he think's he's a good overall coach, and that he'll do well in Knoxville.

Obviously, I don't know if the guy I met is a good judge of coaching skill, but that's what he had to say on the subject.

You mean like going for it on 4th down near mid-field twice against Tennessee and getting stuffed?

I don't know if that's true or not but I do think he'll do great at Tennessee. Yes he may call some silly plays sometimes but what coach doesn't?

I was at the game in Knoxville in the down pour when Spurrier went for it on 4th down........ from INSIDE HIS OWN 15 yard line.

BTW, didn't work.

I like that he has the balls to make decisions like that....even if they don't always work. I want to win, but I want to see exciting Tennessee football too. I want to see successful reverses, blocked punts and field goals, trick plays, and ballsy calls that will get the fans excited.

Play to win or play to not lose?

I'll choose play to win every time.

Statistics show that it is a smart move. The decision to go for it in the UC vs UT game was warranted considering that they were behind and had nothing to lose. I recall at the time that I admired the first attempt, and chuckled at the second.

If you have a question on his play calling or if it's ballsy or not. Check out when he was coaching Central Michigan and beat Michigan State. I was at that game and I was impressed by the way the kids for CMU played. VERY disciplined. :good!:

If Butch can improve on Dooleys amazing time management skills (blowing at least one time out per game because the players aren't lined up properly) and getting the players to play for him when faced with adversity (not quit which is what they did against Kentucky and Vanderbilt losses) then he'll be fine. It's a pretty fine indication of what the last five years of this program has been like beyond all the mismanagement and incompetence....no matter whom we could've of hired or would've hired I think we all agree that Butch is an upgrade. I also hate to sound negative about some random Bearcat fan's observation regarding Butch doesn't carry a lot of weight with me--nor does his opinion unless he happens to be in the coaching community or a player. We have a lot of fans here that thought Dooley was great because he was Southern and a Saban disciple--turns out they were wrong too. We'll see how the season goes.

So is knowing your team. You didnt really provide any argument against the other people, you just wrote a blanket statement, your approximation of the frequency of every coaches mistakes followed by another blanket statement. And really, even your temporal estimation is impossible to validate or reject, making all three points completely empty. The only thing Im surprised at is that you didnt say GBO at the end to give yourself a nice pep rally for your side of the argument that you aided in no way. Just sayin

Armchair coaches always have something to critique. Don't read too much into it.

Butch probably did have to gamble a bit at Cincy. I hope he gambles from time to time at UT. Maybe he won't have to do it so much -- and when he does, maybe our talent level will improve our odds of success.

Living in Cincinnati and having close relations with UC I can tell you that there's not a Bearcat fan around that wouldn't take Butch Jones back right now. In addition, I'm willing to bet most of them would take him over Brian Kelly. It was a much tougher team that he coached. Tifwiw but I think OP's concerns about X's and O's is unwarranted.

He didn't have near the athletes as UT so you gamble. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't. You get what you're dealt with and you play it. Can't blame a guy for that.
