Vols #1 on Rivals

As excited and proud as I am of CBJ, it is easier to recruit when you haven't coached a game. It also helps to have Jalen Hurd, TKJr, and Vic recruiting the way they are and representing us the way they are. The core is very strong with this class and that will help us stay top ten for sure, maybe even top five.

So does 3 seasons at Central Michigan and Cincinnati respectively not count as coaching a game yet?

Nah we don't need to prove we are on the way up at all. 22 wins in 2 seasons says it all. however we need to continue to prove we can maintain that level of play with a number of new defensive starters and the most explosive offense (led the country in yards per play) returning most starters and another sec title game shot. it will be interesting due to the youth we have on defense, but there is a lot of talent on that side so if they grow up fast it will be a good defense.

It tells me UGA won a lot of games and per usual have nothing to show for it. Thing I like is Kiffy boy was showing improvement by beating your underachieving team. And to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised to see Richt out coached by Butch Jones for not only this year, but many years to come.

For those of you who are citing average star ratings, Rivals has changed their methodology slightly. “Unlike the old formula, the new formula uses a prospect's Rivals Rating (RR), not the prospect's star rating, as the key factor in the formula to compute the point totals

For what it is worth, however, 5-star athlete = ranking of 6.1.
4-star athlete = ranking from 5.8-6.0
3-star athlete = ranking from 5.5-5.7
2-star athlete = ranking, presumably, 5.2-5.4.

For a complete breakdown on Rivals’ ranking methodology and the tiered-bonus point system assigned to top-250 prospects, see Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Rivals.com Football Team Recruiting Rankings Formula. To illustrate this process, however, let us take, as examples, Jalen Hurd and Todd Kelly, who currently have 6.0 rankings. They automatically receive 135 base points for that ranking. As the 19th-ranked prospect nationally, Hurd would receive an additional 61 points for a total of 196. Kelly is 61st, so that gives him an additional 40 points, for a total of 175.

We presently have no commitments with a 5.9 ranking, but Daniel Helm, D’Andre Payne and Vic Wharton all have a 5.8 ranking, so they receive a base of 105 points. Helm and Payne are ranked 175th and 206th, respectively, so they receive bonuses of 18 and 11 points, respectively, which raise their final totals to 123 and 116 points. All of this is, of course, subject to significant change as updates are made to both individual and top 250 rankings, but it gives you some idea of precisely where these numerical values come from which go into final team rankings.

As was previously the case, only the 20 highest ranked signees count toward the overall class rank. It is worth noting, however, that “JUCO and Prep School national rankings do not have bonuses. Only those prospects’ RR rating will be considered in the point calculation.” The significance of this statement is that, even if you should sign the nation’s no. 1-ranked JUCO prospect, his point total will be based solely upon his Rivals Ranking, which, as previously noted, ranges from 5.2-6.1. Within Rivals’ methodology, JUCO players simply are not eligible for bonus points.

To me, the new system seems like a more precise methodology and certainly will reward programs who sign a disproportionately high number of Top 250 or even Top 100 prospects.

It is more precise, but that formula is for total points. The average star rating for a team is total number of stars divided by how many you have committed. Which makes that part slightly flawed because it doesn't take into account the different levels within the rating system.

We have several 5.7 3* players, Vandy has several 5.5 3* players; yet average star rating is the same. Which is why I wouldn't use average star rating to rate our class.

How so? Especially taking over a team with three straight losing seasons. He may not of coached a game at TN but he has coached and won every where he has been.

They would not be committed and would not be recruiting like they are if not for their confidence in Jones. I think CBJ is doing an exceptional job.

Enjoy this while we can because it's gonna get UGLY once the season starts. No QB, no defense, no special teams, no WRs. Winning 5 games will be a feat. Just hope some of these recruits don't jump ship once Vandy hangs 40 on us again. Ughhhhhh.

I'm a Vols fan. Went to undergrad and law school there. I just want everyone not to be shocked when Vandy beats us again, because they will. Maybe not by 40, but they will score 40 points.
