You have to have a tremendous amount of empathy and patience. You are with people who are at the absolute lowest point of their life, most of whom feel like they barely have a reason to live. Their emotional and mental state is so volatile it is scary, one minute they love you, and think you are their best friend, the next they hate you, and are capable of doing real violence to you. It is draining and nerve wracking. I do have to say it is rewarding, but it can take a hefty toll on your nerves.
