Rajion Neal had some of his most impressive runs of the spring, breaking loose on an early hard-charging run up the middle and then scoring on left end during red zone work. Alden Hill delivered some punishing runs, including a 12-yard touchdown run with the first team, and Justin King had a couple of impressive catches, including two touchdowns, in team red-zone work.

VQ

I like that bit on Hill.

The only injury of note was Riyahd Jones who left the scrimmage early with an injury but jogged off under his own power. We'll get an update on him as soon as possible. Daniel Gray was the first corner off the bench, replacing Jones with the first team.

VQ

Hopefully not too bad. Interesting that Gray is first off bench.

Vol defenders Justin Coleman, Geraldo Orta and Dan Hood all generated turnovers, with Coleman's a remarkable one-handed, leaping grab in the right corner of the end zone. Orta cleaned up an errant toss from Nathan Peterman in the end zone after Peterman was flushed from the pocket, and Hood recovered an Alton 'Pig' Howard fumble inside the 10-yard line that was forced by a big hit from Dontavis Sapp.

At one point the defense forced turnovers on four out of five possessions.

VQ

Not sure what to think about that. Good for the defense, but concerning on offense.

I think Orta has had a turnover in every scrimmage so far. I guess that's what happens when you have a competent coach back there helping you.

injuries: WRs Carter, Croom, Harris & Dallas were all out. Brendan Downs (left knee) didn't go. Riyahd Jones left with his left knee iced.

"Marlin
continues to be out for disciplinary reasons. And I'll say this, we
hold our players to a very high standard of accountability here at
Tennessee, not matter what it is, the way we play, the way we win off
the field. The way we win off the field is we go to class, the way we
excel in the classroom. So it's a high-level accountability in all
aspects."

"Every
individual is different. I don't believe you treat everyone the same,
but you treat everyone fairly. It's like I told our players coming in
here, they're building their own identities. They're responsible for
what they create by the way they perform on the field and off the field.
What we're going to do, we're going to treat every individual fairly.

Could Marlin be back at the end of Spring Practice??

Michael Palardy had a strong start to the scrimmage both punting an place-kicking, but hit a severe speed bump late in the day. At one point Palardy had five straight misses with the ball on the right hash from 45 yards out before getting his sixth attempt through the uprights.

As for visitors Milan Richard, Vic Wharton, Zach Stewart and Grant Haley were in attendance as were a number of the signees like Woody Quinn, Brett Kendrick and Josh Smith.

At the conclusion of practice Inky Johnson gave the team a spirited talk.

UT’s first-team offensive line had another different look Saturday, with senior Ja’Wuan James moving from right tackle to left tackle and senior Zach Fulton moving from right guard to right tackle. We don’t expect those to be permanent moves, but coaches promised they’d tinker with some things up front this spring, and they’re doing that. Senior James Stone was still the first-team center, and senior Alex Bullard and junior Marcus Jackson were the first-team guards.

The OL got a bit of a new look today at the scrimmage.

We didn’t notice any major changes personnel-wise with the first-team defense, but Coleman seemed to have a very good day. The quarterbacks don’t throw his way very much, and when they do he tends to make plays.

Coleman making strides with his ball skils perhaps.

That quote makes it seem like a grade or class attendance issue with Lane IMO

Sophomore Alden Hill seemed to have a very good day running the ball. He’s a strong kid, and he’s tough to bring down when he gets low and gets a head of steam going downhill. He ran over a couple of second-team defensive backs. He looks much better than he did earlier this spring, and coaches and teammates continue to be impressed with his work ethic. Senior Rajion Neal had a workmanlike day with the first-team but added a bit of hot sauce with an incredibly athletic juke move in the open field that put left defensive end Marlon Walls grabbing air and then eating grass. Neal ultimately reach the end zone from about 15 yards out on that play.

Both RBs had a good day.

Non-participant list:

Several other players were out today. That list includes familiar sidelined names such as junior left tackle Antonio Richardson, junior defensive end Curt Maggitt, senior defensive tackle Maurice Couch, redshirt freshman tight end Justin Meredith, junior receivers Jacob Carter and Vincent Dallas, redshirt freshman receiver Jason Croom, true freshman safety Jalen Reeves-Maybin and true freshman receiver Paul Harris, but some names were added to Saturday’s no-contact list. Junior tight end Brendan Downs and sophomore defensive tackle Trevarris Saulsberry were held out of the scrimmage. None of the injuries are believed to be too serious. Junior cornerback Riyahd Jones — who has been battling a hamstring issue for a couple of weeks — went down during the scrimmage with an apparently leg muscle injury.

Junior running back*Marlin Lane*did not return to practice Saturday after InsideTennessee.com was told Thursday that he was held out for disciplinary reasons.

Several former Vols were in attendance as well including*Jabari Davis, Jason Swain,Herman Lathers*and Inky Johnson. Johnson delivered an inspiring message to the team following the scrimmage. Former head coach Johnny Majors was also taking in the sites.

On special teams,*Michael Palardy*needed five tries from the 45-yard line to make a field goal in team run. Jones made Palardy go until he hit. On punt return, the scrimmage ended with*Alton Howard*and*Devrin Young*having to catch five punts in a row. Young nailed all five while Howard muffed No. 3 and 4 before catching five in a row.

Tiny?? Never mind just read he was out today
And I don't know how sure of a thing McDeezy is, he was tweeting about FSU liking what he hears. I mean he is just visiting and kids tweet about everywhere they go but it's recruiting, you never know until they get their Herbie Hancock on paper

Redshirt freshman*Alden Hill*had a big day on the ground. First, he trucked over cornerback Naz Oliver and he went on to stuff two balls into the checkerboard.

Wide receiver Alton Howard had an up-and-down day. He fumbled on a screen pass and the defense recovered to end a drive. However, later in the practice in goal-to-go situations from Howard grabbed two touchdown passes from*Justin Worley*to win the game.

Rajion Neal*bounced off several would-be tacklers on a third-and-one run that gained about 20 yards. Later in the scrimmage Neal made a great move in the open field on a swing pass from Justin Worley that went for a touchdown.

Recapping some other touchdowns:*Tom Smith*had a rushing touchdown, Devrin Young reeled in a swing pass for a TD,*Justin King*snagged a*Nathan Peterman*pass in the end zone,*Drae Bowles*grabbed a TD on the sideline and walk-on tight end*Alex Ellis*reeled in a TD from Justin Worley.

Cody Blanc*had a nice day. The sophomore threw a huge block and a reverse that likely would have gone for a touchdown in Pig Howard didn’t slip and fall coming around the corner. Then Blanc caught a touchdown from Nathan Peterman in second-team work.

Justin Coleman*set the tone for the defense early with a spectacular one-handed interception of Justin Worley in the corner of the end zone. Coleman later told the media he was out of position, but played catch up and made a play.

Junior college transfer*Riyahd Jones*was injured early in the scrimmage and didn’t return.*Daniel Gray*filled in opposite of Coleman.

A.J. Johnson*was able to collect a sack fumble on a botched handoff to Justin Worley in the early team periods.

Second-team safety*Geraldo Orta*had another big scrimmage. The redshirt sophomore lit up Tom Smith on run and came up with an interception of Nathan Peterman.

Daniel McCullers had a monster clothesline tackle on running back Rajion Neal that ended a drive. McCullers continues to move better as Butch Jones continues to challenge the senior tackle.

Freshman defensive end*Corey Vereen*had two sacks on the day and continues to stick out as a contributor on the second-team defensive line.

The #29 jersey will be used as a reward to any player who shows the best attitude both on and off the field, in honor of Inky. You have to earn it.

Butch is a damn genius.
