Some good points on here about AJ. Let's just say that AJ has great potential like many guys on the roster. It's a journey progressing to being a top player. He has not played as a gap stuffing LB or as a passing zone protecting LB or as a blitzing LB since he came here. Whether that is by design or because he lacks all of the skills is to be determined. His freshman year he was just assigned to make plays against the run game and clean up everything else. His soph year was one of those, "I need to make a tackle somewhere because none of the rest know what they are doing and don't know how to tackle if they did."

Now it is time to be a real LB. Handle his assignments correctly and hold everybody else accountable to do theirs. Then fly to the ball and gang tackle when it moves out of his area of responsibility. Now we will find out if he can move from potential to the real deal. No doubt he will have to learn some new techniques on getting off blocks as well as coverage.

AJ needs to be the intimidator of the Vols defense. He's got to be nasty guy for us upfront. I want him meeting ball carriers play after play facemask on facemask and wrecking them. He needs to be a big hitter all game. And attack blockers not just take them on.

:hi:

I find it funny how they'll believe Mel Kiper just because he has a mic in his hand basically. Because he's never played nor coached the game of football. And I'm not hating on Mel at all but stop the madness folks and actually take a look at what some people are saying before whining about it. We say he's not playing well and explain why then go re watch some of the games. If what we say is not true then point it out after doing some research.

I find it funny how some can think that just because he has won accolades, the coaches and media who voted on this must have seen every single snap, and judged accordingly, as opposed to seeing maybe a game or two, a highlight reel and a stat line.

The point being, is a sophomore LB should have some issues to work on, let's not act like he's Ray Lewis reborn at this point in the game.

After weeks of grinding in the weight room and a couple of intense weeks on the practice field, it's spring break time for the Vols starting today. After pushing his team as hard as we have heard them be pushed on the practice field vocally, Butch Jones has given his team his expectations of them for spring break. And not just in terms of behavior but also in working out and conditioning. All the assistants noted that pace of their practices will quickly expose anyone who doesn't condition properly and doesn't eat properly during their nearly 10-day break.

Regardless of all the talking and warning, there will be some hurting come mid-morning on Tuesday, April 2nd.

But, coaches have made clear that players who return next weekend from spring break are welcome at their homes for Easter meals as this staff really goes the extra mile to promote and manufacture a family environment.

Much of the focus for the defense has been on tackling. Every defensive coach has been dumbfounded by the poor tackling techniques this defense had a year ago and brought with them into spring practice. The result is tackling work every day in individual periods as well as team periods. And no defensive player has been exempt from the tackling critiques, including linebacker A.J. Johnson who missed several tackles in the first scrimmage. The tackling work will continue to be a huge focus when the Vols return after spring break.

Johnson is being challenged, to say the least. No position or starter is safe from competition, period.

The proof will be in the pudding for placekicker Michael Palardy. Obviously, he has to prove it in games, but Palardy has answered every challenge of Jones' through two weeks of spring. Thursday after making four in a row, Palardy ran off the practice field when Jones called him back out for a left hash kick.

Jones barked on the microphone, "it's from the left hash, Palardy, ut-oh". Palardy then promptly drilled the kick.

Doc there were still whoopins going on when I grew up. :) Non of that "time out" nonsense. Lol

Whoopins', timeouts, loss of priveleges, grounding,, push-ups. Whatever it takes still happens at my house :)

Do the crime...do the time.

My son prefers a whippin' cause it is over and you can move on...:)

Seems like every year Palardy blows it up in the spring. I will believe it when I see it during a game. However I sincerely hope he is better because if we have a solid kicking game that could be a one or two game swing

They should only let him practice with a live rush. Full contact.
He needs to feel pressure

Palardy's issues appear to be in the head. It's possible Dooley made those problems worse with his style, and Butch "gets it" Jones will fix those with his style of coaching/leadership

I agree. It would be great to have some confidence in a field goal over 22 yards

How can those guys watch film for the 2013, 2014, and 2015 draft classes and be accurate? Kiper and McShay don't even project that far in advance.

I'll guarantee they look at stats and all-conference teams and project from there. Maybe they watch highlights on YouTube. Maybe.

The thing is, nobody is trashing AJ. Just saying we need more out of him. It's somewhat unfair to critique him last year, because with that defensive staff he probably had no damn clue what he was doing, but it's still fair to say we need more.
I agree as far as needing more. Every player presumably gets better every year. But if a player doesn't who's fault us that? The player or the coaches? If AJ whiffs consistently on plays is that necessarily his fault or the lack if coaching to improve technique or sliding off blocks?

Its a constant criticism of these players who are finally getting real instruction after three years of ineptitude.

@TheDannyParker: @tbrayvol8 on former #Vol WR @darickrogers: "He's changed. He's not the same teenager we were back in college. We've grown up into men now."

Seriously? This jackass is three to four months removed from "college" and now he's suddenly man? Child please.

Yeah this really sounds like you're a fan of the guy.

Me not liking him has no bearing on wishing him well. This is the same old moronic assumption constantly made on here. Why would I want him to fail? It doesnt help my allegiances at all(tennessee football). Right now he's an immature jackass. I hope he grows up and becomes successful. Lets stop having the same stupid conversations every time bray is brought up.

Palardy....dare we dream....:crossfingers:

I'm a physical therapist. I went to a class in Nashville a few weeks ago taught by a guy who uses a unique assessment technique (with the help of others). He works with professional golfer and several Tenn. Titans. He was asked at the end of last season to come and assess every member of the UT football team. He swears that Palardy's groin problem was a major issue and claims he corrected it. He seemed to expect Palardy to be fine this season...TIFWIW

I will say I was very impressed with the class and some of the techniques have helped me in my practice.
