Fulmer to ETSU?

Haha, the "right opportunity/team committed to winning" for Fulmer went from Notre Dame, to South Florida, to Kentucky, to East Tennessee State. And people still think he's turning jobs down?

Let's say you are right. Run and pat yourself on the back for ridiculing the greatest coach in TN history. Way to go.

Literally no one on this board except for you cares about age. Nick Saban is 61 and we'd all take him in a second.

Literally? Why is it one of the reasons the anti-Fulmer crowd uses it against him? They sure care about it when listing the reasons for his firing.

Because they're wrong. It had nothing to do with "the game passing him by" and everything to do with the rest of the conference hiring coaches who didn't completely suck.

No.....it has everything to do with an unforgiving fanbase. Age being one of the b.s. reasons.

Also, Clemson, Louisville, and Kansas. What job do Fulmerites think he's holding out for? The New England Patriots?

NO, absolutely NOT the greatest coach in UT history, that honor belongs to Neyland.....and you know that just like everyone else.

estimated cost is $18 mil, per Dr. Noland. IMO, that is why they need Phil...he can help raise the $$$

I would work out a deal to play on Science Hill field, until they could build one of their own, unless it didn't meet SoCon standards...

It was posted earlier the conference would not allow the use of a High School field.

How would/will they build a multi-million dollar stadium? Where are the "DEEP" pockets that it would take to finance it? If Stanton was able to "nuke" the program so easily without much negative feedback or even strong protests, what does that say about the concern, loyalty, and support for a future program? It is strongly suggestive that the future for ETSU FB would be like the past, ie., it would sink, but next time with a "large" debt overhang. Even "lowly" Austin Peay has a FB program, so If Noland is going to seriously pursue ETSU FB 2.0, PF would give the school some instant credibility, and it would be a good, appropriate, "niche" for him, beyond the glare and pressure of the "big time." But, PF isn't getting any younger and ETSU would have to act very soon if they are serious about reinstating football and if they might be interested in PF. And, to gauge if PF would be seriously interested, any more than making a few phone calls or contacts on ETSU's behalf.

Stanton killed the program with former AD Dave Mullins'(who was the old ETSU tennis coach) and the local media's help. The program was declining but not to the point where they needed to pull the plug. It was mismanaged...that happens when you have a tennis coach as your AD. They basically had made the decision to cut it without even really telling the SoCon, so there was backlash there. The were claiming that it was losing money, yet after eliminating it the proceeded to redistribute the money being spent on football to the other sports. They built a new softball stadium, a new soccer stadium, and a new baseball stadium. The bottom line is, you had a couple of idiots running the show that made some poor decisions...that is why ETSU is where it is right now. The bright side is that Noland and Sander seem to know what they are doing and "get it" that football and basketball are what sells.

From what Sander seems to be indicating, all that remains to reinstate the program is getting student input and then convincing them it will work, while Noland seems to be a bit more cautious. Both seem to be shooting for 2015 as the starting date, which is really just around the corner. Interesting info here:

Peay dropped FB for a decade and have had it back for five years so you seem to be right about the former "employees" who didn't care about the program. Noland says he anticipates that ETSU "WILL" have a FB program, so ETSU will have a ton of work to do in preparation for 2015.

from everything I'm hearing, and again I'm just a fan but I have been keeping up with it from friends that work at the university, this is going to happen. It will not be solely up to the students. They are getting their input, but I think the decision has already been made....I could be wrong, but all signs are pointing towards the program coming back.

It does seem that the decision has already been made which makes the coaching speculation about PF all the more interesting. I'm inclined to think that Fulmer would just assist ETSU in some ways if asked, rather than becoming HC. That should become clearer pretty soon.

I think at this point, talking to the students (whom seem to be on board for the most part from what I've heard) is just a formality. It will not come down to a vote with the student body like it did when Stanton was president in 06-07 (they had an online poll to bring it back then and only 25% of ETSU's 12,000+ student body voted and he said it was enough evidence to shelf the idea). The students should be involved in the process, but this is also a business decision. They have to do whats best for the athletic dept. and the university.

That's how it started with Bill Curry @ Ga. St. I believe he was originally hired or volunteered only to lead the committee set up by the university to explore the pros/cons of starting a football program. But I remember when it happened and everyone knew that Curry would be the logical choice to lead the team if it was ultimately decided that they would start one.

As an aside, I don't think Bill Curry ever for one second thought that becoming the coach of Ga. St. would somehow tarnish his reputation/career. Quite the opposite -- I think it shows that he LOVES THE GAME OF FOOTBALL above all else. I think it shows he wanted to do something outside the box. I think at some point these guys make enough money that for them to take a job like Ga St., in Bill Curry's case, or ETSU, in Fulmer's case, shows that they simply love the game and want to be a part of it. If this actually happens (and seeing is believing so I'm not holding my breath), folks who question Fulmer's motives need to get a life. I think the game of college football is much better with Fulmer in it and if he wants one last hoorah @ 62 years of age and is willing to build a football team that will really make a difference to this small community, then I say more power to him. :good!:

I could not have said this any better. :hi:
