'15 JUCO RB Alvin Kamara (UT commit 6/21/14)

I thought the Hill/Cross trade was a mistake. Wasn't a fan of Bourque from the beginning. Would have loved to hang on to Peters.

But the 2012 class was actually really solid. The 2013 class wasn't going that well, but I think that's a reflection of years, literally, of negative recruiting and a poor on-field product.

Trashing Dooley's recruiting ability is revisionist. He did good work given the obstacles he faced.

It wasn't until this year that I began to think negatively of his recruiting. You can isolate single incidents but for the most part he did a decent job.

2010 - He held together a great class that Kiffin laid the groundwork for. It easily could have fallen apart. Instead, he closed two elite receivers, our starting center, and picked up some nice under-the-radar guys. He also added Malik Jackson and Mychael Rivera, who both played key roles for us.

2011 - Added much needed talent and depth to our O-line. Landed two excellent linebackers and our starting safety. Also landed Couch, Lane, and several other guys who have yet to see the field much, but look like they have potential.

2012 - Addressed much need depth on the D-line. Picked up a good-looking QB prospect. Restocked with some talented WRs. Added a couple talented DBs.

2013 was not looking great. We had some obvious misses, but I think that originates with Sal. They were almost all on the defensive side of the ball. Dooley was doing the opposite of micromanaging (which he's always accused of) - he was trusting his DC's evaluations.

Don't forget, we have a number of highly rated prospects interested in us dating back a long way. North, Massington, Williams, Green, etc. Dooley helped get those guys on board. I know it's cool to bash Dooley right now, but the guy did some good stuff. Particularly the VFL program. Give credit where it's due.

and you're a cyber coach.

so if DOoley can't recruit who in the 2012 class would you rather not have had become a VOL

It sounds bad when you say it like that. I wouldn't trade any of these guys because they chose to be Vols. But they're not as good as other players, on other teams.

Dooley could recruit decently but I really believe that is mostly because the name of the school and some freshness. Definitely could have recruited better. I don't think he was aggressive enough. That goes for coaching as well.
He just seems to hide on the sideline. Every interview, they would ask him questions and he would give the classic "We are not where we need to be, we're better than last week (or before)." Other coaches put it plain and simple. Look at Saban. Saban even coaches more aggressive (maybe not play calling). I just feel that if he was more aggressive at practices to push the players harder, and recruited harder, he would have done a whole lot better.

we'll see. because very few 2012 kids got to play at all. 2013 will be there roll out year and now they'll be under a new coach. Natural athleticism makes it easy to learn; it will prove whatever Dooley saw in these kids to bring them to UT was the right decision or not; or it will prove that BJ may not be the right fit too. We don't know until the season begins. I'm on the train until it stops and they tell eveybody to get off again. we're just gonna roll with whatever's coming; and praying for the absolute best.

One thing's for sure. We're all rootin' like hell that it works out. And I think it will.

Let me put this baby to rest before y'all piss me off about Dooley.

UNDERSTAND THIS CYBER COACHES!! i don't give damn what school you're at or being offerred by, if you don't show interest in that school they move the hell on from you; that simple. So! If 5* instate kid thinks he/she is better than UT and don't show interest then screw'em. Recruiting is two way street. i dont give damn what area a coach recruits in. All of the freakin' coaches can be assigned an area, but dammit if there's no SEC players in TEnnessee, then UT is going to go to Georgia, Florida, VA, HI, CO and get the best... pretty damn simple. Ya' feel me???! All this sh*t about Dooley not being able to recruit is bull*it. Don't blame your noninterest in UT on Dooley not recruiting.

Recruiting isn't about kissing your behind. Its about the best relationship you can build for you and your education and skillset. Bottom line. So the next mo'fo that come on here say something about Dooley not being able to recruit... I'm goin' in on you, so let this post be your warning.

There are many facets to recruiting and these high school kids get the big head when they're in high school thinkin' they some type of fk'n superstar and when they get to college they find that they're peons... U better humble your arrogant ass before you get your feelings hurt bruh. If anything, you better take heed of the whirlpool of sh*t that's going on at UT, and understand that this a money game. It ain't as much about these arrogant ass kids as they want to make it.

NEXT?!?!?

Can't no one tell me Dooley didn't drop the ball on Vonn Bell though. Cause he did.

Has Jason gotten a chance to meet with the coaches? Any first impressions and have they said if he may still make the move to TE? I really think he is going to be huge with this offense.

Are you basing that on the recruiting site rankings? If so, you have no idea how those work. We have some serious talent on the offensive side of the ball. We have athletes in the on D that just need to play ball and stop thinking so much. Talent wise, we are not that far away from the rest of the SEC.

To be fair how can you pull in a great class for 2013 when every coach is negative recruiting you saying you will be fired and any kid in the state, even Bell constantly hear callers on radio shows trash CDD & staff all season. I am not saying he would have landed a top 5 class just the deck was stacked against him.

I agree with this. I think Dooley was a good honest man and a good recruiter but his game day coaching was not up to SEC standards and that is what cost him his job. I was pulling for Dooley.
That being said I think CBJ has a good start with the players Dooley brought in and should be able to turn this thing around.

“He can just do so many things,” Norcross coach Keith Maloof said. “He can catch the ball out of the backfield and had a 65-yard scoring reception (in the semifinals). He threw a touchdown pass (in the quarterfinals) … The kid can do just about anything you ask him to do.”

Should be a great game.

Mzterry can you give us insight on whether Alvin always planned on officially visiting or if this is a new development? If it's a new development can you tell us why? As in is it because he thinks he'd benefit the new offensive scheme or is it because of the new coach, etc? Thanks in advance and sorry if this has already been touched on, I didn't see it talked about.

Defend Dooley all you want, and call out posters to your heart's content. If I were Jason though, I'd be awfully embarassed at how my mother spends her free time cursing and acting like a fool on a message board...

You could start by maintaining relationships with the high school coaches, or knowing kids' names when they show up to camp, Or going to games on Friday nights.

Tri-state area teams ignored by Dooley staff | timesfreepress.com

"If Derek Dooley had stayed as their coach, I would've had a hard time advising any player to go there," current Hixson and former Rhea County coach Jason Fitzgerald said this past week. "That staff didn't follow up or return calls, and really I had no idea who even recruits our area for UT because I've never had one of their coaches come through my door."

"The Chattanooga area had at least one player sign with UT each year from 2002 to '10, including two years in which three area players signed with the Vols. That streak ended in 2011 under Dooley and UT hasn't signed an area player either of the last two seasons, despite having 12 players sign with FBS programs, including five to SEC schools."

Indefensible. If you don't want to sign kids, then don't. No need to burn bridges.
