Official Jon Gruden Thread XVI

I think no matter who we hire, this search is out of Hart's hands now... The big boosters are embarrassed and clearly there is a power struggle and Hart proved himself incompetent already. I think this is going to be a Booster suggested hire, whether Hart takes credit or not.

"Jon Gruden’s name continues to be kicked around as some sort of a done deal. In the minds of some, all that’s played out to date has all gone according to Tennessee’s master plan. Nevermind the fact that UT’s athletic department can’t seem to rub two sticks together properly in recent years, but now Hart and crew are supposed to be overseeing the greatest covert action since D-Day? (If Hart is spotted near the Pas-de-Calais then we’ll start to buy into the subterfuge theory.) In reality, one industry source told us this morning that if Tennessee were to give Gruden the guaranteed money he’s looking for it could bankrupt the program for years. “If you think UT can’t afford a $5 million buyout, try buying out a coach for $20 or $25 million.” So for now, we’ll continue to doubt the Grudenites. We don’t believe Tennessee can afford — literally — to risk that kind of cash on a guy who hasn’t coached college ball in 20 years and who could return to the NFL at a moment’s notice. We’ve been told that Hart and the school’s biggest boosters agree on that point. (And, yes, we a have crow in the MrSEC.com freezer should we need to eat one.)" - from mr .sec

It truly can be a business decision, and the boosters at the top obviously know what they are doing. However, based on the money that I heard the Haslam's were willing to pledge and based on speculation about Peyton pledging money, those numbers for Gruden are attainable. You also have to consider that if Gruden just stays for 3 years, the AD will make alot of money those three years. Ticket sales and merchandise will spike like crazy. I just don't believe Gruden will "bankrupt" a school. It may be difficult, but the money can be found. I think that is a "source" that is just talking with no real substance. The key for UT is to clear the expenses for former coaches. It is like paying that credit card bill for a new HD TV you bought 2 years ago. Pay it off and just pay your overhead expenses.

I know I may be cut from a different cloth than some but I would always have a tough time supporting Petrino regardless of wins...

Lol... I would guarantee that we have never had a saint as a head football coach. They just haven't been caught.. Except kiffin

I'm hoping that has been the point of this fiasco to take the power out of Hart's hands.

That may be true....however, Petrino's behavior has been brought to the spotlight so many times (shady in Louisville and Auburn, the Falcons stuff, the motorcycle fiasco) that it makes you wonder if that much is public how much is hidden from view...

Article from Fansided nailed our current situation right here:

"The Vols coaching search is going through stages: first stage is the stage where you think everybody wants you. You walk into the party, the music is pumping, people are feeling good and you think every sexy, scantly-clad women present wants to bed you. Then they all look at you and walk away like you’re the guys from A Night At the Roxbury and you slowly realize you’re not that great.

Panic mode hasn’t set in and you’re still not ready to settle for the last girl on the bar-line, but you begin to see that could very well be the outcome of of you’re night out. That’s exactly where Tennessee is right now, none of the top-tier women want them, and it’s starting to snowball from there."

Does Anybody Actually Want the Tennessee Vols Coaching Job? - FanSided - Sports News - An Independent Sports Network

Pretty good analogy but let me give you another:

You walk in and see all these beautiful, scantly clad women. The problem is they are all attached to another guys arm. So you start flashing $100 bills, buying drinks for everybody. Before you know it you've got three or four of those women hanging all over you wanting to leave with you in your limo.

When is Hargis gonna drop this bomb? Hopefully the 3 eastern timeframe on leaks is accurate. Only about 30 more mins.

It does seem like something is brewing in Chattanooga.

Thanks liper.

My gut tells me we are gonna know by end of business tomorrow who our new coach is. There is too much pressure on hart. He looks like a fool right now and needs to save face some kind of way.

Yeah, it seems like this going to go one of two ways: Either he has a plan we cannot see or it really is a catastrophe.
