No disrespect to OldVol, because he may very well have connections, but if I'm not badly mistaken, he was also seeming to imply last Thursday that there would be a 3:00 presser this past Friday to announce Gruden. Might not have said that directly, but it was implied, in my opinion. Once again, he could still very well have connections though and something fell threw at the last minute. Water under the bridge.

I think he posted what he heard. But I do believe him about Jimbo though. That's realistic.

Damn Butch is old...not sure he wants the stress of a place like UT. USF would be like early retirement. Coach like 5 years then move up the to the Villages or Miami Lakes

Prolly too old to take the UT challenge. BTW, why do people think Tampa is in South Florida?

Holtz out at USF. A couple of years ago, he was a hot name and would probably be on some of the lists for these openings.

Of the names being mentioned:

1a. Strong - proven DC & recruiter. He's done well at U of L and knows what it takes to win in the SEC.

1b. Fedora - The guy just wins, would've played in ACC championship if not for NCAA sanctions. Very aggressive schemes on both sides of the ball that would be FUN to watch & per some So. Miss fans friends of mine; he's the best coach they've had in their lifetime (34 years).

3. Gundy - He's won a lot more than he's lost and even taken (and won) OkSU to the Fiesta bowl, I'm unsure how he translates to the SEC.......but didn't a lot of people say that about Sumlin?

4. Fisher - I'm a bit wary of him. He's lost at least one game every year he shouldn't have...and even though I'd take winning 8 or 9 but still losing ONE game we shouldn't right now, that is going to get old FAST if it truly is his calling card.

Edited for truth...

This is by FAR the most attractive opening in the country. If we can't land a GREAT coach this week, that has to be on Hart. The roster, tradition, facilities, money, everything at UT is better than any other opening. It's not like Hart just started thinking about who might replace DD right after the Vandy game, surely he had agents contacted and everything set up for hiring a replacement right away. Hopefully all these reports about him not being in a hurry and taking his time are bogus. Not because this isn't an important decision, but because he's known from the day he took the job that he might have to make this hire.

Fisher has lost much more than one game a year he shouldn't have. This is the first year it's only been one, and he's in the ACC with a loaded roster. Bring him to the SEC and it'll be much more than one game a year.

meant to say "at least one game," you're right though...

Not saying that we are not an attractive destination but the dynamics of college football are changing. 85 schollie limit, 25 recruit limit, expansion of conferences, moving to a quasi-playoff, Cheek and his sidekick, and the fact that UT has really struggled for the past 5 years all play into the coach search. The passion our fan base shows can be a negative towards some coaches. UT at this point, other than our resources, is at the lowest point it has ever been when seeking a new coach. Hart has his work cut out for him.

247 is starting to make it seem Charlie Strong is a longshot. Said he's not close to the top of Hart's list. They also said that Hart is not afraid to stay patient in the search and isn't in a hurry to make a hire right now. So put that in your afternoon pipe and smoke it. Who needs a head coach?

If we can win 5 games a season without one for the past three years, imagine what would happen if we actually had a coach.

;)

I kid, I kid

Clay Travis reports we contacted Franklin but he declined. Also said Franklin turned down a $5 million a year offer from Arky. Most absurd thing I have ever read.

I call Clay Travis's report BS.

TN would not give Franklin the opportunity to turn them down.

If Arky offered him 5 million Franklin would have pulled a Kiffin and left immediately.

That really isn't a fair assessment, when put into context. FSU had not had a ten win season since 2003 before he came to town. As of this year, he is averaging 10 win seasons.

He is also 2-1 against Florida.

When is the last time we had a coach with a winning record against the Gators standing on the sidelines?

It would also be fair to say that Saban the past two years has lost a game that he should not have. He won when it counted though.

Fisher is a HUGE step in the right direction, in my humble opinion.

And...he can recruit.

What you say is true about the state of the program, but that probably helps rather than hurts. It lowers expectations in the early years. If we get a new coach that rattles off a 7-8 win season (doable), he will be a hero.

Now, he will need to have us relevant in the SEC East by year three for sure, but at least he won't come in under the pressure to immediately put us in the top 15.

I actually don't doubt that Travis has probably been told that. I do doubt, seriously, that there is any merit to his story.

Franklin is getting way to much credit at Vandy. He walked into Vandy with a senior and junior laden team. Recruiting picked up, IMO, not solely because of Franklin but more because of the 25 man limit the SEC imposed.

Good point that I haven't considered.

I haven't thought about that enough to know how much weight I believe it should be given though, but there is no doubt it would have an impact.

Personally, I think Franklin is a supreme d***head, putting it mildly.

However...he's recruiting better than anyone has EVER recruited at VU--that's not an exaggeration, that's truth.

If he wins the bowl game, he'll have won more games in one season than any other coach in 100 YEARS--that's no exaggeration, that's truth.

He laid the biggest a** kicking on UT from Vanderbilt since 1954--that's not an exaggeration, that's truth.

I'd say if someone from UT didn't at least gauge his interest, they wouldn't be doing their due-diligence.

3 years is a good time frame. It will start with this recruiting class. Be sweet if our new coach can get us in the top 20. Or better.

We agree on the character of Franklin but I disagree on his recruiting. Put it this way, if Dooley had done his job at recruiting Franklin would be eating sloppy seconds. I'm sure you read the startling expose that 32 out of 37 Tennessee high school coaches said they would not recommend a kid play for Dooley. Considered his arrogant attitude not conducive to a players development.

Not to mention that Franklin can hang his hat on beating the worst coached team that UT has, arguably, ever put on the field.
