Other than the "how cool would it be to have him in Knoxville" factor, why is Gruden your number 1 guy? Have you stopped to consider that there ARE risks involved in hiring him that may not be there with other current successful college coaches?
1.) He's been out of coaching if any kind for 4 years. Who's to say that he would be able to hit the ground running and immediately pick up where he left off?
2.) He's never been a college head coach. He's never had to deal with 18 year old kids. He's never had to deal with being responsible for player's personal behavior. He's only coached professionals. How would he deal with being able to relate to 18-20 year olds?
3.) He's never had to deal with NCAA regulations like the 20 hour rule, recruiting rules, etc. He's never had to deal with all the promotional and public appearance obligations that come with being a college head coach. We say that Tennessee is not a "learn on the job" program but in a way, that's exactly what Gruden would be doing.
4.) If what has been said about Gruden is true...that his dream is to get back to the Superbowl...then wouldn't only be a matter of time before he bolts for the NFL again?
5.) We're going to have to pay a king's ransom to get Gruden. Just how much money would be available for a quality staff?
Having Gruden in Knoxville would certainly create excitement. It would put butts in the seats and probably help move a lot of merchandise. However I don't see why so many people think that Gruden is THE answer to getting us back on the winning path. As if it's a sure thing.
