Recruiting Forum: Football Talk II

Honestly it's getting to the point that if Gruden isn't announced as the next coach, the fanbase is going to be disappointed. The AD needs to either put up or shut all this talk down. Otherwise it will continue to build up to a fever pitch.

Apparently Chris Lowe just said on Clay Travis's show that Gruden would take the UT job for 5.5 million. This is from a post on VQ. I think there is legitimate interest between both parties, but that hardly means anything at all.

I hope he is correct because Tennessee can pay him 5.5 million.

Double down on that statement. As much as a majority of this forum wants Gruden - one thing remains - he is not a proven college head coach. Mora, IMO, the minute Washington feels Sark is no longer the man, Mora would bolt to the Huskies.

The main positive I see with Gruden is recruiting. UT spends the most in the SEC, and probably the country on recruiting. I can't help but think that having the Gruden name as head coach would have more kids contacting us rather than us contacting and visiting them. Especially if he's successful.

Absolutely. The recruiting budget could drop significantly. That paired with the increased revenue would be magic. Get the deal done IMO. I don't care what control Gruden wants. Freaking give it to him. I don't want to take a chance on the future of UT football. Enough is a enough.

The contract for MNF may make sense for a delayed announcement. Its not like Gruden is unfettered with present contractual obligations.

Hubbs just said there is no contract obligations holding Gruden back. He could be here tomorrow if it was a done deal. Meyer was working for ESPN when he was hired by OSU and he was hired before his contract was over.

OK, thanks for clarifying. Hart would have to accept any MOU if one in fact exist. It would be presented to the AD like an offer I suppose. This would suggest there could be some back and forth if negotiations are in fact on going.

WoW. I thought he was in a six year deal.

He is, but that isn't going to hold him back from coaching. He can get out of the contract if he wants to coach. Why do you think ESPN is trying out someone to take his place?

I'm not a lawyer so I don't know how the contract would be dealt with, but he does not have to broadcast the rest of the MNF games. Meyer was supposed to broadcast the Ohio State and Michigan game a week before he publicly accepted the Ohio State job, but was pulled from the broadcasting team.

What did Meyer tell ESPN viewers? During ESPN's coverage of Nebraska-Michigan game on Nov. 19, Meyer was asked on the air to comment on reports of his taking the Ohio State job. He responded "there was no truth" to those rumors. Problematically, there were no follow-ups with Meyer, and the interview segment came off about as authentic as the second season of Jersey Shore.
Meyer's continuing canoodling with Ohio State forced ESPN's PR department into action to protect him and the product. He was pulled off the Ohio State-Michigan game on Nov. 26 ("We felt the studio in Bristol was the best place for him given the many storylines and top matchups going on in college football this weekend," said an ESPN spokesperson) before the network finally pulled him off its coverage entirely ("He requested off his studio assignment and we obliged," said another spokesperson, highlighting again that Meyer seemed to be in charge here.)

haha, Meyer one slick dude. He was not lying when he said there was no truth to the rumors, because at the time, any rumor would have been false. :birgits_giggle:

Recruiting is going to be so much fun pretty soon.

Jon Gruden - University of Tennessee Head Football Coach. Just let that sink in.

Wow.

Its been common knowledge for years Gruden wants complete control at his next stop. With Cheek here that will not happen. Like ive said, Maybe gruden relaxed his demands, i dont know. I have no idea whats going on with Gruden. I do know Hart has plans of speaking with other coaches not named Gruden.

Skeeter... What does complete control mean? What does Gruden want that Cheek could get in the way of?

Complete control can't mean what it does in the pros. Hart said compliance is a priority and academic criteria are not going out the window even if levelled to that of competition.

People who were actual insiders and knew something said there was absolutely nothing on Shannon. The Gruden thing is actually possible, not very likely, but possible.

I think Randy Shannon being a linebacker coach at TCU now pretty much proves that was completely false.

Hm I see. I can't remember who said what about Shannon. But yeah, you're right.

We'll see what happens with Grugen. I'm just trying to be patient.

You know forcing ESPN to scramble and causing them trouble really argues that Gruden may be restrained rather than free to make an announcement if its a done deal. ESPN may not want a repeat of the Meyer situation?

Color commentators are quite common in the industry. I don't think ESPN would have to do much scrambling.

ESPN has what, two to three different teams of analysts on various programming. FWIW, Joe Theismann is looking for work.

Look they view MNF as an entertainment slot too. Gruden is a unique commodity in that respect. Remember he is filling a slot Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Miller tried. Celebrity is part of the formula. Its easy for you to second guess ESPN's interest but they may prefer Gruden to finish out the season. They may be fine with working out a process where a replacement can move in too. But to say that MNF is not a hindrance is not necessarily true on its face. We do not know what talks with ESPN may look like at this time.

If they want an entertainer then they by all means should put Chris Berman in the slot. Not disagreeing with you by any means, just suggesting that ESPN, IMO, would not have trouble filling the slot. FYI, I liked Miller but I guess his type of humor was a bit deep for the average fan. TBH, I'm not a big fan of Gruden's commentary. He just doesn't bring it like a Madden. Hell, they should hire Frank Caliendo. :hi:

Point is there may be reasons at ESPN for delaying the announcement. The only football I hardly watch anymore is the Vols, though that Bears Niners game was kind of interesting. I don't have the access a lot the insiders have and I enjoy the prospect of bringing Gruden on board. He would bring a ton of excitement to the program. And observing social media as a conduit for information is fascinating.

Point well taken. I agree that ESPN has to look out for their own interests. The one I was looking at was that if Gruden was free to go (alluded to in an earlier post), perhaps Gruden is doing the right thing by keeping a tight lip and by honoring ESPN until they find a suitable replacement. Up until a said date.
