Gruden's QB Camp: 'Spider 3 Y banana'

NFC West teams do not face the Indianapolis Colts in 2012, meaning presumed No. 1 overall draft choice Andrew Luck will not be on the schedule in this division.

I thought Luck's interview with ESPN's Jon Gruden was interesting anyway. Luck seemed comfortable talking football and laughing at his mistakes, including that memorable interception he threw during Stanford's game against USC.

The "Spider 3 Y banana" reference refers to a staple play from Stanford's offense, one featuring the fullback as the No. 1 option. Turns out Luck should have thrown to the fullback in that USC game.

Hey Jay....hope you are feeling better.

A little birdy just told me Nov. 30. I checked it with my guy and he agrees. Hope they are right.....the publicity that wed get around the championship game would be phenominal for recruiting. Seems to fit the original timeline too.

It's coming.

Gruden sitting as a guest panelist like Kiffin did would be priceless.

Do you guys fell that if we made a bowl that it would have waited until late Dec and since we didn't they feel we need to act sooner?

Very nice.

Do you know or have you read anybody that does understand if Grudens contract would allow him to work both as our HC and announce MNF at the same time??

Boom shacka-lacka

Now the only question I have does the News Senseless have enough room for Gruden on the front page of the sports over whatever lady vol basketball game was played the night before?

I like ole Cut, but I think he's got a good spot for himself right now.

The number one thing that would keep him away is the heart issues. The pressure here is just too much. His quality of life is so good at Duke it is unbelievable. That is from a direct dinner conversation with a close friend of his.

I wished CP could have got his sh#* together and qualified for next year. Im sure Gruden could have convinced him to stay and develop into a sure fire top 10 pick. That kind of talent only comes around every 10 years or so..sure gonna miss 84 out there

So is he for sure not eligible no matter what?

According to today's talking points, a caller on yesterday's program further corroborates much of the Grudenite position on the hiring "search." According to this source, who, of course, does not cite sources, "I've known this guy since the 1st grade. He's a very influential member of the boosters and athletic board and everything else. So, this isn't second hand or something heard on the radio. The coach has already been selected. And....The contract's done....It's over. Now it's just a matter of timing."

He echoes the position taken by many on this forum that Hart truly has been taken completely out of this loop, indeed superceded by monied interests operating on behalf of the UT Athletic Dept. The caller further states that the template used for this hire was, in essence, that employed by Alabama in procuring Saban: "'I did business with a major booster at the University of Alabama, he was in Knoxville. Now, this was after Saban was hired and he said to me let me tell you how this went down. Three guys...and you would know all three names....they went to Saban and they went to the Athletics Director and he said 'well I've offered the job to Rodriquez out of West Virginia' and two days later Rodriquez said I changed my mind. They (the power guys) told the Athletics Director and the President at Alabama 'if you don't change this, all of you are fired.' That's the way things go down."

When asked directly if Gruden is the soon-to-be-announced coach, the caller stated: "I didn't ask names. I didn't want to know because I didn't want to compromise my friend's trust. It doesn't matter if it's Jon Gruden or James X. It will be a fine name who is a proven coach who's won. Everybody just sit tight and relax. It's gonna happen and it's gonna happen soon."

For the record, Basilio said that he does not believe the Gruden "smoke" yet, simply because Tennessee has, to this point, never used this approach in hiring a coach.

The conversation can be heard at the 36:09 mark of a link provided at
The Tony Basilio Show .
