In 2010, nineteen schools including Tennessee, hired new coaches. As of today, only 7 have a record above .500. Brian Kelly, Jimbo Fisher, Tommy Tubberville, Butch Jones, Charlie Strong, Lane Kiffin, and Sonny Dykes.
What does this have to do with Gruden?
Dan Enos, Jeff Quinn, Doc Holliday, Willie Taggert, Bobby Hauck, Mike MacIntyre, Todd Berry, Ruffin McNeil, Mike London, Skip Holtz, Joker Phillips, and Derek Dooley.
That's where we are.
I hear alot about the defense and moving to a 3-4. Muschamp hires Brent Pease after Weis, sure they get off to a bit of a slow start, but in two years they're at the top of the East. He saw what he had wasn't working, brings in a new coach, changes the offense...not so hard.
Not at Tennessee. We go get a guy who's never been a DC. Why?
UF is just one example, but my point is this. Dooley's best chance to beat UF were the last two years. If UF stays ranked, Dooley hasn't just lost the games, he's lost on the recruiting trail. Instead of pulling closer to UF and the others, the losing on the field means losing on the recruiting trail.
To pull closer to our competition on the field and on the trail Gruden is the answer...he may not be the only answer, but he's the only sure fire hire that can bring recruits immediately w/o having beaten anyone. It's instant credibility.
