Official Jon Gruden Thread IV

I had lunch yesterday with a long-time friend that works in one of California's largest marketing firms. He's an avid football fan (UCLA alum) and was asking me about Dooley and his job status. He had heard the rumors about Gruden, and we had a conversation of his potential impact at UT. He told me that Gruden's "Q Score" is ahead of Nick Saban and Urban Meyer. He estimated that Gruden's name, face, and voice recognition would result in him being an excellent promoter for the UT brand and would likely result in growth of 30-40% for sales of UT apparel nationwide. In addition, he firmly believed that if Gruden was announced the head coach by December 15, 2012, he would be able to secure a top-3 recruiting class THIS year. I found this marketing perspective of Gruden at UT very interesting.

Sounds solid

Gruden is exponentially more marketable than anybody coaching college football today. No ifs ands or buts.

If JG wasn't interested then all of these rumors would have been shot down by now. I think there will be an announcement sometime in late december. the last MNF game is dec 22, and out of respect I think he waits till then. JG has the itch to coach again and it will be awesome to seem him in a Tenn visor. GO VOLS

I don't mean any disrespect towards you, I just disagree with this statement. I see this logic frequently, and it is totally incorrect. You do not address internet speculation, because it is endless and much of it is baseless.

In other words, if Hart came out weeks ago and said "These Gruden to TN rumors are patently false", three things would happen:

1) fans who had heard the rumor would speculate that maybe it was actually true
2) fans who had not heard the rumor would start looking for information on why a rumor is being shot down
3) the media, who hasn't heard the rumor, picks it up and runs with it

Those and any number of other reasons are why you do not disavow rumors, it just makes them worse.

Thanks. This is what I assumed. I'm sure at some point he donated money to UT so he is technically a booster.

My only concern is players who make verbal commitments before the change. Sometimes it's tough to get those players to reopen their recruiting.

Its not a violation until he tries to recruit the kid to the place he is hired. The Ncaa would simply stop the recruitment of the kid as penalty.

I agree. Denial from either party would only fuel the rumor...see Nick Saban with the Dolphins as the most relevant example.

It's not all Internet rumor any more. Listen to the radio.

I wasn't talking about being shot down by Hart, I meant by Gruden. If he wasn't considering UT he would come out and say it.

What I was referring to was the idea that IF it was false, it would have been shot down BY NOW.

And I am saying, if it was false, it would never be addressed. Also, if it is true...it will almost never be addressed until it is ready for public consumption.

So silence from the key players is never a way to prove a point, in other words.

I respectfully disagree.

Why would he do that? It is GREAT publicity for him, and by all accounts he is a lover of the media hype.

Did Randy Shannon ever come out and disavow the rumors that he was the DC? Nope.

Did Gruden come out and say that he wasn't the next coach at Arkansas? Not to my knowledge.

There is no point in giving speculation more legs by acknowledging the speculation exists.

You are right! Sincerely, Nick Saban

Top 3 class seems like a stretch but I guess anything is possible.

I've seen nothing that would dissuade me from believing the wheels are still in motion.

As I said a few weeks ago, Hart won't do anything until the new coach is a done deal. And he doesn't have to. Most of the action behind the scenes is being played out by third parties and at the point that it's ready to be consummated, he'll close it.

That , frankly, is how you do a search of this magnitude. At the point which you announce a change will be made, everything will already be sewed up. None of this media flight-tracking circus, etc.
