Getting to watch the first play in game will be a really, really cool thing to go to IMO Verc. I'd do that if I were you.
Hey, did I tell you I'm coming in for the last homestand! I'm so excited.
Every time I call my father "Old Man" he likes to remind me in twenty years my kids will call me that.
Not looking forward to it![]()
You wouldn't tell me to go if you knew how bad my record watching postseason games live is.
That last homestand will be a lot of fun. Going to be there for Chipper's last regular-season game on Sunday?
It's like you wake up one day and you're old.
My old man always told me that mentally he thought of himself as much younger than his actual age. I thought he was nuts (and ancient) but now I kind of understand what he meant.
My kid once asked if George Washington was president when I was his age. He was serious about it.
Even I am pretty confident he'll play through pain that last homestand in Atlanta. He may not play the whole game, but he'll play.
Conversation yesterday with the old man:
"Hey dad, you remember Glenn Robinson, the Big Dog?"
"Yeah! He was awesome at Purdue. Nice pro career. I remember watching him play. Very strong player."
"Well, his son is a five star recruit and suiting up for Michigan this year."
"Son of a......"
I think you nailed it. That's probably the magic number for me.
My grandfather is 87 and, as of late, seems to think he's 25. Last I heard he was taking a road trip this weekend to see some friends.
This thread is making me tear up. My dad hardly took the time to watch sports when he was alive, but when we were able to both watch a game together it was usually a Braves game - with Chipper playing (unless he was injured).
Just realizing it's almost over brings back a flood of memories. I'll almost certainly cry when he has his final curtain call.
I'm 42. The frau has 24 and 21 year old nephews who ask me to go drink beer, and while I always go (of course), I sort of keep having to remind myself that these guys are not my contemporaries. The younger one was a month old when I turned 21. I feel older than them, but maybe 8-10 years older. Not twice as old. It sucks.
I don't have any sports hero other than the Great General Neyland himself, but I grew up with Chipper. Chipper's rookie year was 1993, the year I was born (okay, I was born Dec. 31st, 1992 but the point remains dammit!). After Chipper retired, I was not in a daze, but definitely down a little bit. My mom asked why and I was like "Mom, Chipper's my childhood. I did everything Chipper did on the baseball field. His batting stance, the high socks, the switch hitting (which I was awful at). Basically, this is the end of my childhood."
That's kind of how I look at it in a weird way since Chipper never has met me. It's the end of my childhood. I will cry after his last game. Not just because my favorite athlete ever will be gone, but it's the end of an era also.
Dammit.
I know exactly what you mean. I'll also add that most of the time when I'm hanging out with people my own age, they seem much older than me.
I recently ran into a girl who graduated high school a few years before I did. She was an old woman! I couldn't believe it. I felt for a minute like I had just stepped out of a wormhole.
