when we were buying her car she wanted a camry. so we test drove an LE(or XLE i dunno) it was ok. very cushy ride. But they didn't have one in black, they did have a black SE which they offered to us at the price of the LE. Huge difference in handling. it was a looooong test drive.

Most people are only looking for fair market price which this sounds like. Plus I'm lazy.

I hope you are prepared for criticism about your ability to do your job. Apparently there is a correlation between car buying and professionalism.

I can't stand haggling and doing research. RV on the other hand could be part Jewish. (sorry for the stereotype) She is tenacious with that sort of thing. I cannot take the stress and would get pizzed off to easy.

I won't buy it if I can't haggle! The cashiers at Kroger hate me!

I don't even know who is looking at a car, but if we're talking to tri, check out acurazine.com if you want to find a private party deal.

I can say that buying a new car is much easier than buying used. Not as much room for negotiations with used. That's when the research comes in to play.

The only time carmax is even worth a look is for an extremely rare car, because they will ship cars relatively cheap cross-country for you. The problem is, the more rare the car is, the more shipping is. Also, their prices tend to be $1k - $2k above the price you could get from a used car lot.

I did glance at them when I was looking for a car 5 or 6 years ago. The more common cars were available to be shipped for $0 - $250. The STIs and others of similar demand and rarity were about $800. That, and Carmax's prices always approached the prices the dealers were looking for.

I bought a motorcycle instead.

My car must have been an oddity then, the carmax price was on the button for what the used lots were offering. At the time people were not making deals.

That's why I hate going shopping with RV anywhere. It is an obsession I think.

My last TV was sticker price $2499, and I paid $1700 and it wasn't even a holiday!

HH Gregg ftw! They're the only haggle friendly electronics store left. They suck in every other regard.

Water off a duck's back Nerd. Have you ever been bothered by the bad stereotype that plagues your profession?

True which is why Carmax is successful. They will be slightly above fair market value but its an easy buying process. People are willing to pay a bit extra for the convenience.

Being a sales guy, I know the pricing strategies and psychological tricks we use. I don't mind arguing for an hour especially when I know is going to save me thousands of dollars. Car salesman hate me.

Offering*

They may not have been "making deals," because you weren't trying.

Used car lots prices would've come down if you talked to them.

Same with RV on the TV. Sticker was $1000 and she got the last display model for $500.

I want my lawyer to be a mean nasty tough sob. I want the other lawyer to be Nerd.

Just kidding. :)

The dealerships were all about showing me new cars, I said no to that, I don't want new. They kept saying they could get me a great deal. Well I can't save lots by buying slightly used! It was a lot of negotiating, but its worth it to me to save a couple k's.
