Yulee, Florida running back Derrick Henry opened back up his recruitment a few weeks ago and now he has a new leader. He named Alabama as his new front-runner earlier this week, but they aren't too far in front.
"I put them in front as my leader, but I'm still very interested in Georgia and Tennessee," Henry said. "Everyone is freaking out because I made them my leader, but that doesn't mean I'm committing. I just like them a little more right now, but nothing is finished."
Henry hears every day that certain schools like Alabama would move him to defense if he ends up choosing to play in Tuscaloosa. So how hard is it to trust what coaches are telling him is actually genuine?
"It's kind of hard, but when you look them in the eye you can basically tell," Henry said. "I know what I'm capable of doing and I know how hard I'm going to work. I'm going to give it my all and they won't have any choice, but to play me at running back."
One coach that Henry has full faith in is first year Tennessee running backs coach Jay Graham. The two have truly hit it off and Graham is a huge reason that Henry has so much interest in a Vol program looking to take a big step back to relevance this season.
"I like coach Graham a lot," Henry said. "He's not going to stop recruiting me. He's always recruiting me hard and he let's me know they are thinking about me. He always stays in contact with me and he asks me how I'm doing and about my team. He really wants to coach me."
It's not all recruiting for Henry as he tries to get better each day through his off-season training program. It's a process of trying to fine tune his skills and he won't allow anyone to outwork him.
"Usually we run and do conditioning," Henry said. "Then we lift and I do lot of things. It changes every day. I workout in the morning and then do it again in the afternoon after a break. I just want to get better and I think I just have to have the mindset to keep pushing myself. If I'm not working then someone else is and I don't want to be outworked. I just have to stay hungry."
If you follow Henry on Twitter then you'll see him re-tweeting fans as they make their best case for their school. Some end with RTR, some call for him to wear the orange and white and others beg for him to hunker down. It's a bit overwhelming, but he enjoys the chance to see the passion.
"I get so many," Henry said. "Usually they are trying to get me to go to their school. Now that I named Alabama as my leader, I'm getting messages from Georgia and Tennessee fans. It's cool and I appreciate their passion. I just try to keep things in perspective that I'm blessed to be in this position."
Henry will be back in Knoxville from July 16-18 to see Graham and the Tennessee program. He plans on being a mid-term enrollee and will make his final decision in December before enrolling in January.
"I want to enjoy the process and take full advantage of it," Henry said. "You only get this chance once and I want to take full advantage of it. I'm going to take my official visits. Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee, and Southern Cal will definitely get an official. They have been recruiting me for the longest and hardest."
