As much fun as it is to verbally berate and belittle people who can't grasp the proper definition of irony, I think their misunderstanding has worked its way into fact. Last I checked, coincidence was one of the now officially accepted definitions of the word irony.

I will choose to carry on the legacy of the irony haters of the late 20th century, though.

My 16 year old asked me a few months ago about the difference between Irony and Coincidence. The best I could come up with was: "Irony is the exact moment when Coincidence turns into WTF"

That was the best I could do.
