Should Imus Get the Boot?

Should Imus be fired for his racist remarks?

I would hope that his employers make the decision based on what they think is right -- not because Al Sharpton, etc. are calling for his head.

I voted NO, but take him off TV just so MSNBC can be less significant.

I do find it funny though that Jesse Jackson was marching outside Imus' studio - A guy who made racial remarks being protested by a guy who once referred to New York as "Hymie-town".

Jaime-town? I thought it was Hymie-town.

The mere fact that Sharpton and Jackson are calling for his head makes me think he should NOT be fired :)

no, but take him off TV.

I remember when his radio show used to be fun to listen to. Watching him is painful though, almost as painful as howard stern's tv show without the strippers.

I commented in another thread that if Rush Limbaugh can be fired for his comments about the media needing Donovan McNabb to succeed as a black quarterback, then Imus should be fired as well. There is a definite double-standard at work when someone perceived to be on the left makes a racist/bigoted comment.

Hmmm. I wonder if Sharpton brings on the rappers on his show that refer to women as "hoes and bitches"? My guess would be no.

I knew it wouldn't be long before media political bias crept in. Amazing how Rush Limbaugh is being paired with a foul mouthed old comedian.

When all is said and done, the networks that host him will have to look at this from a cost benefit analysis. With Imus you know what you're getting. Is the risk of controversial comments worth it? Regardless of what happens it is because of the free market and the pressure applied from consumers. If enough money is threatened, they'll drop him.

I think this is the appropriate punishment for his comments. I'm not sure it warrants complete closure to his career on the air waves. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson Jr. are displaying textbook hypocrisy on CNN right now.

I don't condone the remark by any means, but I find it interesting that this one drew so much fire given Imus's history with stuff like this. He once called the Knicks a bunch of "chest-thumpin' pimps." I don't see much difference except the most recent remark was directed at young women. Either way, it appears Sharpton was right when he interviewed Imus this morning on radio and told him he would probably emerge unscathed from this. A two-week suspension amounts to a vacation, and then he'll return to higher ratings.

I merged these two threads, one thread on Imus is more than enough.

well, I won't argue that right should win because it always gets swept under the free speech rug. I know what you're asking; I'm not suggesting that money doesn't win, only that it's a shame it always does. naive, silly me. :shakehead:
